What critics are saying

  • Cuts are on the table: Puck reported in October 2026 that Netflix is weighing layoffs of about 5% of staff.
  • The performance bar is unforgiving: managers apply a keeper test, asking whether they would fight to keep each employee.
  • YouTube draws more TV viewing: figures reported in October 2026 put it at 14.2% of TV time, Netflix at 7.8%.

What makes Netflix unique

  • Scale is its moat: Netflix passed 325 million paid memberships by the end of 2025, serving nearly a billion viewers.

Netflix's real rival is YouTube, not Disney, as engagement worries grow

Netflix's biggest rival for viewers' attention may be YouTube, not Disney, as worries grow over how engaged its subscribers are. The streamer had more than 325 million paid memberships at the end of 2025. The Wall Street Journal reported in July that engagement was showing signs of decline. Netflix calls engagement "healthy," but it cut its What We Watched viewership report from twice a year to once a year. It says it aims to speed up growth in view hours. YouTube offers free videos and a premium plan, with fresh content daily. Its ad revenue hit $11 billion in the second quarter of 2026, while Netflix expects $2.7 billion in ad revenue for all of 2026. Netflix is adding live events, such as football, boxing, and concerts, though rights cost money.

Netflix walks away from Xbox licensing deal after Microsoft asks $800M versus $500M offer

Netflix reportedly walked away from a deal for seven years of exclusive film and TV rights to Microsoft's Xbox game library, which includes Halo and Gears of War. Puck News reported that Netflix first offered $500 million, but Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma asked for $800 million. Netflix's chief financial officer, Spencer Neumann, rejected the counter as too expensive. The offer was pulled after a mid-October restructuring that cut about 1,000 jobs and saw content chief Bela Bajaria leave. Former Disney executive Peter Rice replaced her. Xbox is now pursuing several smaller deals. Amazon gets "Fallout" Season 3, Paramount Pictures gets a "Call of Duty" movie, and Netflix keeps "Gears of War" and "Diablo." Netflix's third-quarter revenue rose 12% to $12.9 billion, but it cut its 2026 advertising forecast from $3 billion to $2.7 billion.

Netflix viewing slumps despite subscriber growth after password-sharing crackdown

Netflix is adding subscribers, but they are opening the app less often, according to a new Bloomberg report. The trend has raised concern inside the company. Total time spent on the platform rose only slightly in the first half of 2026, and the gain came from having more subscribers, not from people watching more. By Netflix's own measure, qualified play days (QPD), viewership has been falling for a couple of years. The slide began after the company's 2022 password sharing crackdown, which was expected to cause only a temporary dip. Cancellations, competition and price rises do not appear to be the cause. Netflix points to weak promotion, user interface changes, and programming that misses the mark. It also faces slower advertising sales, slowing revenue growth, job cuts, and a leadership shake-up.

China's first AI-generated film to get a theatrical release flops at the box office.

China's first AI-generated film to get a theatrical release flops at the box office. 28 October 2026 Chinese audiences may be happy to let AI generate their microdramas - but a fully AI-generated feature film may be a step too far. China's first AI-generated feature to release in cinemas, the sci-fi thriller Sanxingdui: Future Past, flopped at the Chinese box office. The movie, produced by Bona Film Group, tells the story of an archaeologist who must save the future world enslaved by AI, according to Chinese state media. It only managed to generate an estimated $180,000 through Monday, according to ticketing platform Maoyan. The film had a budget of $1.5 million, according to AFP. Jiang Defu, the company's chief operating officer, acknowledged the film's lukewarm reception in an interview with Chinese film outlet Yuli. Still, he argued Sanxingdui was an important experiment. "We are the first to try it, the first to get a theatrical release permit, and the first to be tested by the audience," he said. "I think that is not easy at all." Fortune has reached out to Bona Film Group for comment. Social media reactions to the film have been mixed. "China's first AI movie totally traumatized me," wrote one user on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media platform similar to Instagram. Another user was more positive: "My biggest takeaway? AI movies are super low-cost and let you tell stories with complete freedom." Do audiences want AI feature films? AI has already taken over microdramas, or shorter narratives designed for social media platforms like TikTok. According to Caixin, over 95% of the more than 120,000 Chinese microdramas released in the first quarter of 2026 were AI-generated, compared with nearly zero just a year ago. The cost of making these dramas has plummeted too, down to as little as $3,000. But Sanxingdui's flop suggests that consumers don't want to see AI in a full-length movie. "The public is highly skeptical about AI use in major feature films, despite their general acceptance of short-form films," said Stanley Rosen, a University of Southern California professor who specializes in Chinese film and society. In the U.S., the use of AI in filmmaking is controversial. In 2023, U.S. screenwriters and actors went on strike, in part to demand protections against the use of AI. AI models like those from ByteDance and Higgsfield AI are already being used in Hollywood productions. On Oct. 9, Netflix released its crime thriller "Animals," whose director Ben Affleck admitted that he had used AI. "I used [AI] for lots of things in that movie," Affleck said during a Bloomberg event, adding that he was "a little bit hesitant to point out what they are" because movies are meant to "foster the illusion of reality." Rosen says that he isn't convinced that audiences would watch an AI-generated film in theatres unless it could match the quality of the likes of "Avatar" or "Nezha 2." Such films may instead find a home on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. "The financial loss of Sanxingdui: Future Past will compel others contemplating using AI for feature films to tread more carefully," he says.

Nick Jonas holiday comedy for Netflix sets January 2027 production start in New Jersey.

Nick Jonas holiday comedy for Netflix sets January 2027 production start in New Jersey. A holiday comedy feature starring Nick Jonas is gearing up for a January 2027 principal photography start in New Jersey, and with the production currently in active casting and pre-production, the window to get on board is very much open. The untitled Netflix project, developed under the working title "Unt. Nick Jonas Xmas," centers on Abigail Benton, a young and precocious girl whose mother has recently passed away, and the unlikely relationship she forms with her cousin Tom Benton, played by Jonas himself. While Christmas comedies can sometimes read as lightweight studio fare, the emotional core here, a child navigating grief while finding an unexpected bond with a reluctant family member, suggests the filmmakers are aiming for something with a bit more warmth and resonance underneath the laughs. For crew looking at their 2027 calendar, this is a real opportunity worth tracking closely right now. Directing is Ari Sandel, whose feature resume makes him a natural fit for this kind of family-friendly crowd-pleaser. Sandel won an Academy Award for his short film "West Bank Story" and went on to direct "The DUFF" for Lionsgate in 2015, a sharp and commercially successful teen comedy that demonstrated his ability to balance humor with genuine heart. He also helmed "Wish Upon" and has extensive television credits to his name. Sandel is a director who knows how to work efficiently within genre conventions while keeping audiences emotionally invested, which is exactly what a holiday comedy with this kind of premise demands. The screenplay comes from Tamara Chestna, who is also serving as a producer on the project. Chestna has writing credits across both film and television, and her dual role here signals that she has been closely involved in shaping the project from the ground up. That writer-as-producer dynamic often results in a more stable creative environment on set, with fewer last-minute script changes driven by external pressures. Nick Jonas is attached not only as the lead but also as a producer, joining a producing team that includes Mark Ross, Steve Barnett, and Spencer Berman. Jonas's involvement on the producing side is consistent with the trajectory he has been building in the film world beyond his music career and prior acting work, including his appearances in the "Jumanji" franchise. His familiarity with high-profile studio productions and his obvious stake in the project's success should translate into a committed, well-resourced set environment. The production is being developed through Atomic Honey, a production company that is partnered here with Netflix directly on the feature. Casting is being handled by Chelsea Ellis Bloch and Marisol Roncali, with Kevin Slowey serving as casting associate and Miranda Kang as casting assistant. Agents and managers representing young female talent in the pre-teen range should be paying particular attention, as the role of Abigail Benton is clearly the project's central casting priority. Netflix's attachment tells crew a great deal about what to expect in terms of scale and resources. As a streamer that competes aggressively in the holiday content space, often releasing multiple original Christmas features each year, Netflix consistently backs these productions with budgets that support professional, union-level shoots with full department staffing. Holiday features for the platform tend to fall in the mid-to-upper range of their feature budget tier, and productions filming in established markets like New Jersey are typically run as SAG-AFTRA productions with competitive rates. The Atomic Honey banner has worked within this ecosystem as well, and the combination of a Netflix deal and a multi-producer setup suggests this is not a stripped-down production but a properly resourced feature. Filming is set to take place in New Jersey, with a production start date of January 19, 2027. New Jersey is an increasingly active production state, backed by a competitive film tax incentive program that offers a transferable credit of up to 30 percent on qualified production expenses, which has been a significant driver of feature and television production in the state in recent years. The Garden State sits in close proximity to New York City, giving productions access to one of the deepest and most experienced crew pools in the world. Department heads based in the New York tri-state area will find this a highly accessible shoot, and productions filming in New Jersey frequently draw from both the local New Jersey crew community and the broader New York film workforce. Stage facilities in the region include Chelsea Piers in Manhattan, Silvercup Studios in Queens, and various New Jersey-based stages that have expanded in capacity as incentive-driven production has increased. A January start date in New Jersey also signals that the art and locations departments will need to think creatively about delivering a Christmas aesthetic in the dead of winter, which may or may not align with the story's actual seasonal setting. Either way, the timing and geography point toward a production that will keep local crew busy through what is traditionally a quieter stretch of the year. With a January 2027 start, this production is roughly a year out, but casting is actively underway and pre-production is moving. That means department heads in art, costume, production design, and locations are likely being considered or approached in the coming months, well ahead of when general crew hiring accelerates. The full production listing on ProductionList.com, including production office contact information, the confirmed crew list as it builds out, and any scheduling updates, is the best place to monitor this one as it develops. If you are a New Jersey or New York-based crew member looking to plan your early 2027 calendar, or an agent with young talent right for the lead role, bookmark this listing and check back regularly.
