Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Business Administration, Real Estate, Economics, Public Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to maintain knowledge of local, county, state, and federal policies and their impact on County operations and initiatives.
  • Ability to manage and develop relationships with business owners, residents, nonprofit leaders, government leaders, and community leaders.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • The position requires occasional evening and weekend travel.
  • New Jersey residency is required in accordance with the New Jersey First Act.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of an employer-paid physical examination, drug screening, and background check.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the point of contact for Middlesex County businesses.
  • Field business development requests, assess business needs, and connect businesses with resources.
  • Respond to small business inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Connect, coordinate, and track business referrals to partner agencies and resources.
  • Support businesses applying for local and state programs, public and private grant opportunities, and navigating local and County government.
  • Recruit constituencies and maintain an extensive network of relationships across the small business and main street business community and broader community and public-private partner networks.
  • Assist in the management and design of small business programs.
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment of small businesses for partner programs.
  • Manage and assist in developing programs and events to attract, educate, and retain small businesses in Middlesex County.
  • Assist in coordinating meetings and events.
  • Draft agendas, schedule meetings, and manage the Small Business Division calendar of events.
  • Provide clients with advice on new plans and strategies.
  • Assess business needs and connect clients to appropriate resources.
  • Understand and communicate the requirements of opening and operating a business in New Jersey.
  • Provide technical assistance to small businesses and main street organizations and inform local government officials about available resources.
  • Lead, organize, or assist with special projects related to economic development.
  • Engage with government departments across Middlesex County to provide services to constituents in the small business and main street community.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Business Engagement on business retention, attraction, and support strategies.
  • Monitor the county-wide small business community and draft research reports outlining key insights for senior government officials.
  • Communicate ongoing research and provide policy recommendations to the Division Head and senior government officials.
  • Serve as an in-house expert on small business affairs and main street economic development.
  • Analyze economic, regulatory, and small business sector market changes related to Middlesex County main street economic development initiatives.
