Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Cytotechnology, Histotechnology (Medical Laboratory Science), or a related field, or an associate's degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or a related field is required.
  • Current licensure is required as applicable in the state where services are provided; in West Virginia, an applicable High Complexity Testing Personnel license, Cytotechnologist license, or Histotechnologist license is required.
  • Four years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Technician, Histotechnologist, or Cytotechnologist is required.
  • The employee must be able to sit for extended periods and lift or pull up to 25 pounds.
  • The employee must understand environmental factors and infection control issues and maintain a safe environment.
  • The employee must tolerate a loud, noisy environment and foul or unpleasant specimen odors.
  • The employee must demonstrate competency in serving neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient populations.
  • Knowledge of medical technology and management principles is required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise the operation of laboratory services in assigned areas and oversee day-to-day workflow.
  • Assist managers in supervising laboratory areas to ensure appropriate personnel coverage, adequate staffing, and appropriate staff support for patient care.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff and provide input for annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and terminations based on documented performance.
  • Coordinate the shipment of reference laboratory specimens and ensure results are received within the specified time frame.
  • Coordinate computer downtime activities with laboratory information system personnel and technical staff in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Operate and supervise laboratory equipment and prepare patient specimens according to standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Solicit and provide input for developing and revising standard operating procedures and department policies.
  • Apply hospital and laboratory administrative, safety, and collective bargaining policies consistently and seek management guidance when needed.
  • Respond to customer inquiries, perform customer service duties, and monitor customer service, specimen processing, and phlebotomy activities to identify problems and provide solutions.
  • Request input and direction from medical directors, administrative directors, and managers regarding medical and technical issues, employee training, quality assurance, and quality control procedures.
  • Organize time, materials, and resources; prioritize laboratory requests; and adjust workload and staffing to support patient care and efficiency.
  • Participate in staff meetings and in-service activities to disseminate information to laboratory staff, allied health personnel, medical directors, physicians, and nurses.
  • Maintain laboratory communication and ensure new policies and procedures are communicated to staff and incorporated into routine procedures.
  • Review and evaluate quality control records and test results to identify analytical errors, shifts, and trends and correlate data to assure quality patient test results.
  • Prioritize workload throughout laboratory sections within the division to support patient care and efficiency.
  • Ensure daily workload is completed within established turnaround times by organizing work according to test urgency and reviewing pending test results.
  • Communicate with supervisory personnel, laboratory personnel, hospital departments, patients, and the public to disseminate information and identify or resolve problems.
  • Participate in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision, and evaluation of residents and medical students according to laboratory policies.
  • Oversee the daily operation of the microbiology laboratory.
  • Work with the Lab Manager, Technical Director, and Laboratory Medical Director to ensure proper functioning of the laboratory.
  • Ensure staff compliance with testing procedures and quality assurance measures.
  • Provide input to performance evaluations for laboratory personnel.
  • Assist the Technical Director with maintaining and updating the procedure manual and validating new tests.
  • Monitor specimen turnaround time and coordinate daily workload and staffing requirements.
  • Maintain quality control and quality assurance measures in the laboratory.
  • Perform microbiology technologist duties as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with the College of American Pathologists by reviewing checklists and implementing required changes.
Desired Qualifications
  • A national certification through the American Society of Clinical Pathology or American Medical Technologists as a Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Cytotechnologist, or Histotechnologist is preferred.
