Fortinet and Palo Alto stocks surge as AI safety warnings become a buy signal.

Fortinet and Palo Alto stocks surge as AI safety warnings become a buy signal. The same warnings that had UN diplomats worried last week are the reason two cybersecurity stocks are having the best year of their corporate lives. Fortinet has more than doubled this year. Palo Alto Networks is up over 100% too. And the rally kept accelerating through the same stretch when Amodei briefed the UN Security Council on AI misuse and loss-of-control risks, after separately warning that a swarm of rogue AI agents could cause massive internet damage within six to twelve months. Normally that kind of warning tanks risk assets. Here, it's fuel. On September 23, Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman addressed the Security Council directly, with Amodei naming misuse and loss of control as the two dangers he's most worried about in increasingly capable systems, according to Axios. A month earlier, more than 100 companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft signed an open letter warning that the industry has only months to prepare for AI-enabled cyberattacks, as TechCrunch reported. OpenAI has already disclosed one of its own research agents breaking out of its sandbox mid-task, and separate incidents saw AI agents commandeer the German programming wiki DseWiki to generate roughly 15,000 to 18,000 unauthorized edits as a communication channel, according to reporting on the incidents. That's not hypothetical risk. That's a documented breakout, from OpenAI's own systems. Wall Street's read is blunt: if the models themselves are now the threat, the company selling the fence around them wins. Fortinet shares hit a fresh 52-week high of $181.37 on September 24, according to Barchart data, and were up about 119% year to date as of September 25, still comfortably ahead of the Zacks Security industry's 86% gain and miles past the broader tech sector's 18%. Palo Alto was up about 105% year to date. Neither stock got there on hype alone. Fortinet's second-quarter 2026 results, filed with the SEC, show billings up 33% year over year to $2.37 billion and product revenue up 52% to $773 million, driven specifically by AI-workload demand for its firewalls and SASE products. Total revenue climbed 26% to $2.05 billion. Off the back of that, management raised full-year guidance to $8.02 billion to $8.18 billion in revenue, roughly 19% growth, with billings guided to $9.35 billion to $9.55 billion. The company also shipped FortiSOC, a cloud security operations center that runs agentic AI across SIEM, SOAR and threat intelligence, and folded AI visibility and data-loss-prevention tools into FortiEndpoint. Enterprises aren't just buying more firewalls. They're buying firewalls built to watch their own AI deployments. Fortinet acquired Virtue AI on August 17, 2026, folding the startup's agent red-teaming and MCP security tools into its FortiAIGate platform. The deal, immaterial in size to Fortinet's financials, signals that securing autonomous AI agents from hijacking and prompt-injection attacks is becoming a core cybersecurity business line rather than a... - how to secure AI agents from hacker attacks - red teaming autonomous AI agents for vulnerability detection Palo Alto's bet is more direct: sell protection built around the exact models that are triggering the warnings. On September 22, the company launched Unit 42 Continuous Frontier AI Defense, a subscription service that uses Anthropic's Mythos and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 models to hunt for AI-specific threats, according to Yahoo Finance's reporting on the launch. CEO Nikesh Arora isn't hedging about why. In a CNBC interview published September 24, he called the industry's talk of slowing AI development unrealistic, saying "not everybody is going to pace themselves." Join the discussion. Fortinet expansion suggests Calgary's cache is growing among global companies.

Fortinet expansion suggests Calgary's cache is growing among global companies. The $30-million cybersecurity hub adds another international company to the city's growing tech ecosystem. US cybersecurity firm Fortinet opened up shop in downtown Calgary last week, reflecting the city's growing place in the global tech sector. The news: Fortinet, which develops and sells cybersecurity products as well as carrying out cybersecurity research, unveiled the hub on Sept. 16. The eight-storey, $30-million investment features a cybersecurity community hub, a customer experience centre, a training facility, and a Fortinet Cloud point of presence that the company says will bring Fortinet's cloud security network closer to Alberta organizations. From the source: "Alberta's core industries are undergoing massive digital modernization right now, connecting physical operations to the cloud," Gordon Phillips, Fortinet's regional vice-president for Western Canada, told BetaKit in an emailed statement. "Our presence in Calgary will allow us to collaborate much more closely with partners and customers across the province." The context: The company's Calgary hub joins Burnaby, BC, and Ottawa as homes for Fortinet's Canadian operations. Fortinet said Calgary's research operations will focus on both AI-driven cybersecurity threats and risks to operational technology (OT). OT is hardware and software used to monitor or control physical, industrial equipment or infrastructure. Security around OT is particularly important in Alberta, where much of the province's cornerstone industries, like oil and gas, are integrating physical and digital operations. Final thought: Fortinet's decision to lay down roots in Calgary underpins the city's continued momentum within the Canadian and broader tech sector. This past summer, Calgary emerged as the fastest growing ecosystem in the country, having added more than 900 tech companies to its roster in just five years. That crowning achievement came on the heels of a deliberate effort by the city - home to some of Canada's biggest FinTech, healthtech, and aerospace startups - to diversify itself away from a strictly oil and gas economy toward and position itself as an innovation capital. While Fortinet is framing expansion as an affirmation of its commitment to the Canadian market, its decision to do so in Calgary is reflective of a maturing ecosystem that has become top of mind for many US and international companies. Sovereign AI meets quantum-ready defense with FortiNDR.

Sovereign AI meets quantum-ready defense with FortiNDR. New FortiNDR Capabilities Strengthen Quantum Readiness, Automate Deception, and Bring AI On-Premises Today's detection and response tools face a tough challenge: Attackers are moving faster, hiding in plain sight longer, and increasingly using AI to amplify their efforts. Fortinet's NDR portfolio is designed to meet these challenges with two complementary offerings: FortiNDR Cloud, a cloud-native SaaS platform with 365 days of data retention, and FortiNDR, purpose-built for air-gapped and on-premises-only environments. The latest releases on both platforms deliver three standout capabilities. FortiNDR Cloud introduces new dynamic deception capabilities as part of the Fortinet Automation Service (FAS), which turns decoys into active response triggers. Its new post-quantum cryptography (PQC) dashboard helps teams prepare for quantum-era threats. And FortiNDR also introduces FortiAI Sovereign, bringing fully on-premises, unrestricted AI-powered investigation to air-gapped environments. Here's what's new. Get ahead of quantum risk with the new PQC dashboard. Quantum threats are not a someday problem. Harvest-now, decrypt-later (HNDL) attacks mean the exposure clock is already running. FortiNDR Cloud puts that risk front and center with a dedicated PQC dashboard. Customers get a continuously updated, evidence-based picture of their cryptographic posture from traffic they already monitor, with no new agents, scanning, or decryption required. The dashboard helps teams identify sessions still relying on classical key exchange, prioritize remediation where HNDL exposure is real, track hybrid adoption as migration progresses, and provide concrete evidence when regulators or the board ask where things stand. Because the same view surfaces weak ciphers and outdated TLS versions, it improves today's encryption hygiene and helps organizations prepare for tomorrow's threats. The PQC dashboard is powered by new SSL event data that captures cryptographic versions in network traffic. This gives teams concrete, network-derived visibility into where quantum-vulnerable encryption remains in use, turning a looming compliance requirement into something they can see and act on today. Dynamic deception brings agentic defense to life. Deception technology only earns its keep when it does more than just sit and wait. With advanced dynamic deception capabilities built on a native FortiDeceptor integration, every interaction with a decoy is automatically annotated and surfaced in FortiNDR Cloud, where analysts already investigate and hunt threats. Teams gain immediate visibility into attacker activity involving decoys, without a separate console or swivel-chair investigation. FortiNDR dynamic deception does not stop at visibility. Paired with the new FAS, FortiNDR Cloud can automatically deploy additional decoys to misdirect attackers, gather more evidence, and strengthen detection across targeted networks. An AI investigator that works the case for you. FortiNDR Cloud AI capabilities take a major step forward in this release cycle with the new AI investigation agent. This agentic AI autonomously conducts multistep investigations of detections and delivers findings and recommendations in the analyst's preferred language. It is accompanied by a wave of FortiAI upgrades, including persistent, resumable chat history; exportable results; support for custom detectors; and a one-click "Investigate with FortiAI" button on every detection. More reasons to love this release. * Attack maps (beta): Visualize related traffic from an impacted device to spot lateral movement before it spreads * Natural language query library: Use or customize ready-made example queries without needing query-language expertise * New telemetry for the AI era: Detect generative AI usage through deep packet inspection and use new DNS fields designed to identify exfiltration * Built-in documentation search: Global search now indexes the FortiNDR Cloud Portal Guide, keeping help no more than a search away Sovereign AI, now on the appliance. The latest FortiNDR release also features FortiAI Sovereign, an enterprise-grade, AI-powered investigation tool that runs entirely within an organization's environment. Unlike cloud-dependent AI assistants, FortiAI Sovereign runs natively on the FortiNDR center appliance without relying on Fortinet's cloud AI proxy. For FortiNDR customers, this means no token limits, no top-ups, and no data leaving the network. For organizations in government, defense, banking, and operational technology where the cloud is not an option, FortiAI Sovereign delivers the same AI-accelerated investigation capabilities without compromising sovereignty. Additional capabilities in the latest FortiNDR release help SOC analysts triage, investigate, and resolve events. Machine learning-based observation profiles detect behavioral anomalies, such as DCSync, vertical port scans, and diameter traffic anomalies in telecommunications networks. Whether it's dynamic deception actively misdirecting attackers as they explore the network, a PQC dashboard putting quantum risk on the radar today, or FortiAI Sovereign enabling unrestricted AI investigation behind the air gap, FortiNDR and FortiNDR Cloud share a single mission: to give security teams the fastest path from detection to resolution, wherever their data must live. Fortinet introduces FortiManagement Cloud: centralized management for network and security. oplus_1048576 Fortinet introduces FortiManagement Cloud, a cloud-based platform that brings network management and analytics together in a single dashboard. Fortinet launches FortiManagement Cloud, bringing network management and security together in one centralized environment. The company primarily targets SMEs that want to maintain an overview of the number of users, devices, and locations. IT teams are faced with limited resources and must simultaneously ensure the security of their infrastructure. The use of different management platforms increases the likelihood of inefficiencies and human error. Research shows that employees lose an average of 51 minutes per week to tool fatigue, caused by constantly switching between management systems. FortiManagement Cloud. The solution combines the management of FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiAP, and FortiExtender into an integrated dashboard. Organizations benefit from lower management costs and reduced complexity. FortiManagement Cloud supports faster deployment of new locations thanks to zero-touch provisioning, reusable templates, and configuration copying. Centralized management makes it easier to apply a consistent security policy. Furthermore, the platform offers reporting, analytics, and event management. This provides more insight into network performance and helps detect and handle incidents faster. The automation of SD-WAN overlay networks further contributes to simplifying the infrastructure. Multitenant and zero-touch provisioning. FortiManagement Cloud is designed for both individual organizations and managed service providers. MSPs can manage multiple customer environments via the multitenant architecture without data or settings becoming mixed. Roles and permissions are customizable per user or environment, and reports can be adapted to the MSP's branding. With zero-touch provisioning, the rollout of network equipment is simplified. Devices are pre-registered and automatically provided with the correct configuration as soon as they are added to the management environment. This makes it possible to efficiently roll out multiple locations simultaneously and ensure standardization.
