Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Food Science or related fields such as microbiology or chemistry is required, although knowledge and experience may substitute for the degree.
  • One to two years of related quality-control and/or laboratory experience is required.
  • Ability to understand and maintain the basic elements of quality control and food safety, including adherence to specifications, compliance with food laws and regulations, food sanitation, insect and pest control, and food safety programs such as Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with occasional exposure to cold temperatures, fumes, loud noise, moisture, chemicals, and lifting or carrying materials and products up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, use hands and fingers, walk, reach, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, or crouch as required by the job.
  • Ability to use computers, printers, telephones, copiers, and occasionally fax machines, and to wear required safety equipment and protective garments.
Responsibilities
  • Perform laboratory tests on raw materials, products in process, and finished products to verify that products and processes meet specifications and customer expectations.
  • Assist with Quality Control Technician duties at the direction of the Quality Control Manager.
  • Analyze juice-product raw materials for microbiological integrity, including standard or aerobic plate counts, yeasts, and molds.
  • Analyze raw materials for chemical characteristics including Brix, acid, Brix-to-acid ratio, oil, calcium, pulp content, vitamin C, color, and turbidity.
  • Analyze raw materials for physical visual defects and organoleptic characteristics including flavor, aroma, and appearance.
  • Analyze finished products within their specifications for microbiological, chemical, physical, and organoleptic requirements.
  • Calibrate instruments and devices within the quality-assurance department and specific production instruments, and maintain calibration records.
  • Conduct quarterly bottle-volume tests on Blow Mold production and test bottle volumes when processes or Blow Mold dies change.
  • Conduct biannual bioburden tests on all bottles and caps.
  • Sample and analyze process water weekly for microbiology, color, and flavor.
  • Maintain raw-material and ingredient receiving, sampling, and inspection procedures, including drawing samples from the tops of tankers.
  • Monitor juice products to ensure food safety and quality in accordance with the Safe Quality Food program.
  • Perform chemical, physical, and sensory tests on juices and concentrates to determine compliance with regulatory standards before permitting shipment receipt.
  • Maintain and order the equipment, chemicals, reagents, and supplies required for production and laboratory quality-control functions.
