Requirements
  • Two and one-half years of satisfactory full-time journey-level experience as a mason or in a closely related trade, such as bricklaying, plastering, tile setting, or mosaic and terrazzo work; or an approved combination of experience and masonry-related trade, technical, vocational, or college education as specified.
  • A four-year, full-time apprenticeship in masonry or a closely related trade recognized by an authorized labor department or apprenticeship council may satisfy the requirement.
  • A valid New York State motor vehicle driver license with no disqualifying restrictions must be held at appointment and maintained throughout employment.
  • The applicant must pass the required medical examination, drug screening, and applicable random drug and alcohol testing.
  • The applicant must understand and be understood in English to perform the duties and responsibilities.
  • The applicant must prove identity and the right to obtain employment in the United States before employment.
  • The applicant may be required to pass a civil service examination and be hired from the resulting list to obtain permanent civil service status.
  • The applicant may be required to complete formalized training and a probationary period successfully.
Responsibilities
  • Perform general masonry work in New York City Transit properties under supervision.
  • Install and repair cinder and cement blocks and ceramic tile.
  • Install cement sidewalks and floors.
  • Install and repair gratings, ducts, manholes, drains, and sewers.
  • Mix mortar and concrete and pour concrete.
  • Load, unload, and drive motor vehicles.
  • Walk and work along tracks and perform flagging duties.
  • Work in confined spaces, on scaffolds and lifts, and along subway tracks, including areas with live third rails.
  • Lift and carry heavy tools and equipment and work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work various shifts, including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
