What believers are saying

  • Boeing brought fuselage production in house: December 2025's completed Spirit acquisition includes the 737 structures business.
  • Demand supports long production programs: July 2026 reporting lists Boeing's commercial backlog above 6,200 airplanes.
  • Eligible staff study without annual STEM tuition caps: Boeing pays partner schools directly under Learning Together.

What critics are saying

  • Commercial recovery remains unprofitable: July 2026 reporting shows Boeing's airplane division lost $322 million in the second quarter.
  • Boeing bears defense overruns: fixed-price deals supplied roughly 60% of its defense manufacturing and defense services revenue in 2025.
  • Union negotiations shape Boeing factory careers: its U.S. workforce has 32 separate labor agreements with different expiration dates.

What makes Boeing unique

  • Boeing dominates cargo aircraft: it says its freighters serve over 90% of the global air freight market.
  • Service work extends beyond Boeing jets: Global Services supports equipment regardless of its original manufacturer.
  • Heavy lifting uses two rotors: Boeing's Chinook places its lifting rotors in tandem for cargo missions.

Boeing shares fall to $168 as Q3 loss misses estimates and 737 ramp-up stalls

Boeing shares fell sharply after its third-quarter results, as management admitted ongoing production problems. The stock trades at $168.11, down from $188.32 before the earnings. Revenue rose 3.9% year on year to $24.19 billion, in line with analyst estimates. Adjusted earnings per share were -$0.34, against expectations of -$0.20. Operating margin improved to 1.5% from -20.5% a year earlier, and backlog reached $745.4 billion, up 17.3%. Chief executive officer Robert Ortberg said stabilising 737 production is taking longer than planned, with wing manufacturing and fuselage supply from Wichita proving difficult. Deliveries were the highest since 2018, but he said progress is "not always going to be perfectly linear." Chief financial officer Jesus Malave Jr. called the 777X delivery timing a significant risk to 2027 targets.

Boeing Q3 revenue rises 3.9% to $24.19B as 737 delays drive wider loss; backlog hits $745.4B

Boeing met Wall Street's revenue expectations in the third quarter of 2026, with sales up 3.9% year on year to $24.19 billion. Its adjusted loss of $0.34 per share was well below the expected loss of $0.20. Operating margin rose to 1.5% from -20.5% a year earlier. Backlog reached a record $745.4 billion, up 17.3%, helped by defence wins including the US Navy's FA-XX fighter and a PAC-3 expansion. Chief executive officer Robert Ortberg said 737 production remains unstable, with wing manufacturing and fuselage supply causing delays. Boeing expects stable output of 47 jets a month next year and aims for 52 by late 2027. The company projects free cash flow of $2 billion in 2026. Shares trade at $167.96, down from $188.32 before the results.

StockStory has picked three large-cap stocks it says have solid fundamentals: Boeing, Trane Technologies, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Boeing (market cap $136.8 billion) is part of a duopoly in commercial aircraft. Unit sales grew 51.8% on average over two years, and earnings per share rose 60.5% annually. Its shares trade at $170.95, or 209.5x forward P/E. Trane Technologies ($94.85 billion) grew revenue 11.1% annually over five years, with earnings per share up 20.5% a year. Its shares trade at $434.31, or 26.1x forward P/E. Vertex Pharmaceuticals ($136.9 billion) posted 13.5% annual sales growth over five years and a return on invested capital of 29.5%. Boeing shares plunge 11% to $168.18 as 737 Max delivery targets slip

Boeing shares fell 10.69% to $168.18 on Tuesday after the company said it would miss delivery targets because production rates are improving more slowly than hoped. Trading volume hit 46.8 million shares, about 588% above the three-month average of 6.8 million. Third-quarter revenue of $24.2 billion missed analysts' estimates of $23.8 billion. The adjusted loss per share of $0.34 was wider than the $0.25 forecast. Boeing will not reach its goal of delivering 500 737 Max jets this year. Slower production growth will also delay its path to profitability. The results dampen recent good news. The Federal Aviation Administration approved the 737-10 Max earlier this month, and in September Boeing won a US Navy fighter jet contract.

Boeing posts $745B record backlog, but $464M free cash flow disappoints Wall Street

Boeing's turnaround is advancing, but cash is arriving more slowly than Wall Street wants. The company reported third-quarter revenue of $24.2 billion, up 4% year over year. Its adjusted loss narrowed to $0.34 per share from $7.47, and free cash flow rose to $464 million from $238 million. Backlog hit a record $745 billion, including more than 6,300 commercial aircraft. Still, Commercial Airplanes posted a $697 million operating loss and a negative 6.5% margin, hurt by delivery mix, higher supply-chain costs and spending on future production increases. Analysts are split. Jefferies cut its free cash flow forecasts to $2.2 billion for 2026, $4.8 billion for 2027, and $8 billion for 2028. Operationally, the FAA has certified the 737-7 and 737-10, and net debt has fallen to roughly $25 billion.
