Rush, Endeavor to merge into Illinois powerhouse. Joining forces could give the two Chicagoland systems a leg up in the region's fragmented and competitive hospital market - if regulators approve. Published Oct. 15, 2026 Dive brief: * Rush University System for Health and Endeavor Health have announced plans to merge, a deal that - if approved by regulators - would create one of the largest health systems in Illinois. * The combined system would control 12 hospitals and 400 outpatient clinics backed by Rush's respected academic medical reputation and Endeavor's deep pockets, giving it a potential edge in the competitive Chicagoland market. * Endeavor plans to fund a $1 billion investment as part of the deal, which will be funneled into research, community care, and quality and innovation initiatives at the combined system, according to a joint release on Wednesday. The transaction is expected to close early 2027 subject to regulatory review. Dive insight: Rush and Endeavor presented the merger as a marriage of equals. Endeavor is providing a sizable infusion of cash to bolster key initiatives and taking the reins of the C-suite, with current CEO J.P. Gallagher tapped to serve as president and CEO of the combined system. However, the system will operate under the Rush name, given the brand's "strong national reputation and position as a leading academic institution," according to the release. Its board will be led by a chair from Rush, and include include 20 people comprised equally of representatives from Rush and Endeavor. Chicago-based academic medical center Rush operates three hospitals in the area: Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Rush Oak Park Hospital in Oak Park and Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora. Its flagship medical center has been frequently named one of the top hospitals in the country, and has a reputation for technological innovation along with high-quality care. Endeavor, formed in 2022 from the merger of North Shore University Health System and Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare, is the third-largest system in Illinois, with nine hospitals in the northeast. Hospital mergers are picking up, driven by smaller operators looking for larger partners to help them weather today's difficult operating environment, and by stable systems seeking to strengthen their competitive advantage. The proposed deal between Endeavor and Rush reads as the latter. Neither system is struggling financially - Endeavor brought in more than $663 million in net income during its most recent fiscal year, according to Becker's Hospital Review. That's up from a loss the year prior when the system was hit with legal costs. Meanwhile, Rush brought in $294 million in net income in the twelve months ended June 30, up 57% year over year. Instead, the merger appears to be a bid for scale in a competitive metropolitan area. Chicago has a high volume of providers jockeying for patient volume and market share - including many academic medical giants, like Northwestern Medicine, University of Chicago Medicine and Advocate Health - but no dominant player. Rush's market position has been "comparatively weaker" than its academic medical peers, given "competition in the Chicago area remains robust," Fitch Ratings wrote when reaffirming Rush's bond rating late last year. Joining with Endeavor could help Rush leapfrog the competition. Together, the combined system will have more than 46,000 employees and clinicians serving more than 2 million patients each year in Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana, according to the release. "The system will aim to excel as the region's first-choice healthcare provider and employer," the release says.

Doubling down on its investment in Arintra. Tanvi Narain Arintra is unlocking revenue and reducing operational burden for health systems by automating the claims process. Counterpart is thrilled to double down on its investment in Arintra, backing Nitesh Shroff and Preeti Bhargava, PhD, for their Series B fundraise, alongside Define Ventures, Peak XV Partners, Spider Capital, Endeavor Health Ventures, and others. When Counterpart made its initial investment last year, Counterpart were drawn to the simplicity of the value proposition: unlock revenue and reduce operational burden for health systems by automating the claims process. Counterpart also loved the origin story; Nitesh and Preeti's experience with the broken, opaque world of medical billing is what led them to found Arintra. Over the last year, Counterpart has watched Nitesh and the team relentlessly work their way into large hospital systems and physician groups, an industry that is notoriously skeptical of startups trying to break in. They've earned trust the hard way: through results, and it shows as they become a centralized, audit-ready revenue cycle platform for their customers. Congratulations to the team! Excited for what's next. Arintra banks $25M series B funding round for AI-driven revenue assurance platform. Artificial intelligence-driven medical coding platform Arintra announced Wednesday a $25 million series B funding round to expand its revenue cycle platform. Define Ventures led the funding round, with participation from existing investors including Peak XV Partners, YNHH Center for Health Care Innovation, Endeavor Health Ventures, Y Combinator, Counterpart Ventures, Ten13 and Spider Capital. "Revenue cycle management is an essential part of the modern health system, one that is only becoming more important as many face immense financial, labor, and revenue challenges," said Chirag Shah, Define Ventures partner, in a statement. "Though many have tried, no solution to date has been comprehensive and strategic enough to provide health systems with the bottom-line impact they need - until Arintra. Launched in 2020, the platform codes charts at scale to reveal patterns related to documentation, outcomes, work relative value units (wRVUs) and denials. It says its revenue assurance platform is the first of its kind, unifying revenue cycle management (RCM) operations. Arintra co-founder and CEO Nitesh Shroff told Fierce Healthcare the company plans to use the capital to broaden its revenue assurance platform, expand across more enterprise health systems and expand its clinical and specialty coverage. "We are not a point solution," Shroff said while noting that his company is alone in providing automated coding across inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory and emergency care settings. "We're building the broad revenue assurance platform with the mission to ensure hospitals get paid accurately, timely, and in full for all the services." Arintra has raised $51 million to date, according to Shroff. The executive said Arintra is working with "several large health systems" across the country with combined patient revenue of more than $50 billion. "On an annualized basis, we are processing more than $5 billion worth of claims across all our customers," Shroff said. "That includes large health systems, academic medical institutions and very large physician groups." Moreover, the company says its approach provides customers with a 5.1% increase in compliant revenue capture, a 32% reduction in cost, and a 43% decrease in coding-related denials. Meritus Health Vice President and Chief Information Officer Michael Fried said in a statement, "automation and digital transformation are core priorities" as its organization grows. "We chose Arintra for the partnership, the depth of integration into Epic and support for our unique workflows, and the time to value," Fried said. "We were live within two months and saw the impact across our revenue cycle immediately. We've since expanded across multiple specialties and are looking to keep partnering and innovating on how we transform our revenue cycle, including complex areas like surgery and inpatient." In April, the platform launched new documentation improvement capabilities to help healthcare organizations view gaps impacting compensation and denials. With these capabilities, organizations can identify such gaps, understand how specific documentation decisions impact coding and deliver provider education at scale. More about Arintra. Arintra is an enterprise AI platform for revenue assurance in healthcare, empowering health systems to get paid accurately, promptly, and fairly. Combining agentic AI with deep clinical expertise, Arintra autonomously codes every chart, explainably, across 23+ specialties and every care setting a health system operates - then cascades that intelligence across the revenue cycle through documentation intelligence (CDI) and denial appeals. Leading enterprise health systems including UC Davis Health, Mercyhealth, Meritus Health, Rochester Regional Health, Reid Health, Mercy Medical Center, and more use Arintra as their centralized, audit-ready revenue cycle platform. Arintra is available in the Epic Toolbox and on the athenahealth Marketplace, is HITRUST e1 certified, and earned a 93/100 with A+ performance rating from KLAS Research. related insights
Teamsters, nurses protest outside Endeavor offices. Dozens of nurses from Evanston Hospital rallied Wednesday morning outside of Endeavor Health's administrative offices on Central Street, alleging the administration has engaged in intimidation and anti-unionization activities amid union organizing efforts by nurses. The nurses, joined by Teamsters Joint Council 25 and Teamsters Local 743, allege that two Evanston Hospital nurses were fired after participating in union organizing efforts in May, with Teamsters representatives hand-delivering a letter to an administrator demanding that the nurses be reinstated and that unionization efforts be supported. Rep. Jesús "Chuy" Garcia (D-Chicago) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) have both publicly condemned the health system's behavior, with Schakowsky writing in a social media post last week that she stands "with these nurses and am deeply concerned by allegations that union supporters were fired amid organizing efforts." Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias joined the protesters Wednesday morning in Evanston, as did State Senate District 9 Democratic nominee Patrick Hanley, expected to represent most of Evanston in Springfield next year. Cook County Commissioner Josina Morita was also present, along with State Sen. Lakesia Collins of Chicago. "For this company to not let nurses organize, unionize, for them not to show respect, for the people that love us and take care of us more than anyone else in the world, is shameful, it's dangerous, and we will not allow it," Giannoulias said. Union leaders said that the Teamsters had filed "multiple charges" with the National Labor Relations Board against Endeavor Health, alleging violations of federal law. Thousands of nurses at several Endeavor hospitals, including Evanston, Skokie, Glenbrook and Highland Park, announced during Nurses' Week that they would seek to unionize, citing concerns about pay cuts, unsafe working conditions and staffing issues not being addressed by Endeavor. Endeavor intensive-care unit nurse Stacy Oswald said she felt Endeavor "priorities profits over people," calling it a nationwide "epidemic... happening in our community, too." "While our pay was taken away, management got bonuses," Oswald said. "Safety concerns led a lot of nurses to leave Endeavor for better, more stable positions elsewhere. The hemorrhaging of nurses leaving Endeavor for better opportunities has only continued." The two senior intensive-care unit nurses fired, unionization leaders said, were dismissed in early May after dropping off gift bags with union information to nurses at Evanston Hospital, and were suspended without pay after a 12-hour night shift. They were then allegedly fired for "misrepresenting themselves [by] wearing their work badges and scrubs while also wearing a union T-shirt," Tricia Poreda told WBEZ. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss was not present at the protest, but did send a letter to Endeavor Health President and CEO, J.P. Gallagher, on June 1, writing that he had been made aware of nurses who had "reported experiencing a series of retaliatory measures that have prompted Teamsters Local 743 to file charges against Endeavor at the National Labor Relations Board." "Evanston Hospital is an important pillar in our city, providing health care services to our community," Biss wrote in the letter shared with Evanston Now. "I want to be clear that Evanston has no tolerance for retaliatory measures taken against employees for engaging in union organizing activity, or for any other anti-union practices that violate the National Labor Relations Act or other federal, state, or local laws." In a statement to Evanston Now, a spokesperson for Endeavor Health said the following: We carefully review each individual employment action to ensure compliance with all applicable laws. We fully respect the federally-protected rights of our nurses to engage and make an informed choice about union representation. While respecting these rights, we must prioritize the safety, privacy, and care of our patients and team members and maintain consistent enforcement of our workplace policies. We strive to create an environment where our team members feel valued and supported and have continuous opportunity for engagement and development. We are appreciative of the long-term commitment and dedication so many of our team members have made to our patients and each other and believe patients are best served through a direct relationship between team members and management. At this time, no Endeavor Health hospitals are represented by unions.
Nurses at Endeavor Health will hold a press conference on 10 June to demand their employer cease union-busting tactics as they seek to organise with Teamsters Local 743. The healthcare workers are fighting for a voice in workplace decisions affecting patient and staff safety. Last month, Endeavor Health unlawfully terminated two nurses at Evanston Hospital due to their union activity. Hospital management has allegedly engaged in surveillance, coercion and interrogation to discourage nurses from joining the union. The Teamsters are calling on management to reinstate the dismissed nurses and stop interfering with workers' legal right to unionise. The press conference will take place at Endeavor Health Corporate Center in Evanston, Illinois, at 10:30 local time.
