What believers are saying

  • Q2 2026 free cash flow hit a record $2.2 billion.
  • Lihir's nearshore barrier targets more than five million additional ounces from 2028.
  • Ahafo North reached commercial production in October 2025, adding 275,000-325,000 ounces annually.

What critics are saying

  • Cadia's September 2026 seismic disruptions still threaten Australian output and guidance stability.
  • Red Chris development costs already exceed Newcrest-era estimates, squeezing returns and budgets.
  • FAST-41 permitting at Spring Peak can delay Newmont's $40 million Stage 2 commitment.

Dalio's debt "heart attack" warning: US debt tops $40T and gold nears $4,000

Ray Dalio's warning of a US debt "heart attack" looks more pressing 19 months on, and gold has so far rewarded those who heeded his advice. Speaking on Bloomberg's "Odd Lots" podcast in March 2025, the Bridgewater founder put the timing at "three years, give or take a year." US debt crossed $40 trillion in August 2026. Interest costs take about 3.3% of GDP, and in July the 30-year Treasury yield hit its highest level since 2007. Gold traded below $3,000 an ounce when Dalio spoke and is now near $4,000. Newmont, the largest gold miner, sold gold at an average $4,317 an ounce in the third quarter, against an all-in sustaining cost of $1,454. It reported adjusted earnings of $2.20 a share on revenue of $6.36 billion.

Newmont, DRDGOLD and Franco-Nevada lead gold stocks with net margins above 34%

Gold briefly traded above $5,000 earlier this year, putting miners with tight costs and clean balance sheets in focus. A Simply Wall St screen of gold stocks with net margins over 34% highlights three names. Newmont, with a market cap of $118.9 billion, is a large global gold miner. It aims to cut operating costs and lift margins through productivity gains at sites such as Lihir and Boddington. DRDGOLD recovers gold from surface mine tailings in South Africa. It posted a 38.1% net margin and 33.4% return on equity on ZAR 11,159 million of FY2026 sales; its market cap is $2.1 billion. Franco-Nevada, a Toronto-based royalty and streaming company, has a market cap of CA$62.7 billion. It earned about $2.0 billion from precious metals in 2026, as record gold prices lifted royalty revenue.

Newmont's 223% three-year run looks fully valued, with DCF value below $114.11 share price

Newmont shares have returned 222.6% over three years, but a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis suggests the gold miner may now be fully valued. The stock trades at $114.11, modestly above the model's estimated intrinsic value. The model starts from free cash flow of about $8.7 billion over the past twelve months. It assumes higher cash flow around 2027 before a return to more muted long-run trends. Newmont recently reported earnings per share of $2.20 and revenue of $6.4 billion. Hopes for a return to growth in 2027 may already be priced in, leaving little room for disappointment. Investor views differ. Bulls see the stock 17% undervalued, citing synergies from the Newcrest Mining acquisition. Bears see it 19% overvalued, warning of rising costs as reserves deplete.

The company also repurchased US$5.2 billion of stock during the first nine months, underlining its focus on returning capital to shareholders. The quarter saw operational impacts from seismic activity at the Cadia mine, but production recovered in the third quarter. Portfolio-wise, Newmont struck a deal with Barrick Gold to contribute properties to the Nevada Gold Mines venture, with a US$1.95 billion cash payment expected in Q4. In Ghana, changes to the stability agreement and royalty rates kicked in after 31 December 2025, resulting in higher operating costs, especially with gold price movements. What did Newmont management say? President and Chief Executive Officer Natascha Viljoen said: Its strong result this quarter demonstrates Newmont's world-leading portfolio and disciplined capital allocation - delivering robust free cash flow and returning value to shareholders. What's next for Newmont Corporation? Looking ahead, Newmont expects to complete the contribution of new properties to Nevada Gold Mines in the fourth quarter, which should deliver a non-cash gain. The company continues to prioritise sustainability and project expansion, with major projects at Tanami in Australia, Cadia, and Red Chris among its near-term development focus. Management flagged ongoing inflationary pressures and sees continued volatility in input costs and commodity prices, though the company's robust balance sheet and liquidity provide flexibility. Share buybacks and consistent dividends remain key parts of Newmont's capital management approach. Newmont Corporation share price snapshot. Over the past 12 months, Newmont shares have risen 23%, outperforming the S&P/ASX 200 Index (ASX: XJO), which has declined 2% over the same period.
