  • The role requires the ability to work under highly stressful conditions and adapt to varying workloads and assignments.
  • CAPE advancement level requirements vary: Level 1 requires no experience and accepts graduate nurses with less than 12 months’ experience with a diploma, associate degree, BSN, or higher; Level 2 requires one year of experience; Level 3 requires two years of experience and one specialty certification, which is preferred but not required at that level; Level 4 is available with a BSN or higher, or with an associate degree/diploma and five years of experience, and requires one specialty certification; Level 5 is available with an MSN or higher and four years of experience, a BSN with four years and a health-related Master’s Degree, or a BSN with five years, and requires one specialty certification; Level 6 is available with an MSN or higher and at least seven years of experience, with consideration for other health-related advanced degrees that assist with direct bedside care, and requires one specialty certification.
  • To apply for the next CAPE level, a nurse must meet the requirements of the current level and the next level’s required years of nursing experience, degree, and certification. Nurses approved for levels 3 through 6 must complete and submit five competencies annually to maintain their level.
  • Required competencies include regularly serving as a charge nurse and/or precepting new staff or nursing students. Participation in quality improvement and shared governance is required at the organization level for Level 5, and at the system level for Level 6; Level 4 requires participation at the unit level.
Responsibilities
