About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline; mechanical engineers with strong electrical and power-system experience are also considered.
  • At least 2 years of experience designing, building, analyzing, and testing power electronics or complex electrical hardware.
  • Strong fundamentals in power electronics, including DC-DC conversion, switching and linear regulation, current sensing, and maximum power point tracking or peak-power tracking; alternatively, a track record of quickly developing electrical depth from an adjacent hardware background.
  • Experience with battery systems, including cell selection, pack design, battery management, and safety.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture, board-level design review, and circuit simulation and analysis.
  • Experience with power budgeting, energy-balance analysis, and load analysis.
  • Understanding of the space environment's effects on power hardware, including radiation, thermal vacuum, charging, and eclipse cycling.
  • Laboratory fluency with instruments, electrical ground support equipment, debugging, and test automation.
  • Hands-on experience building, debugging, and testing electrical hardware.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, or be eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end electrical power system design, covering power generation, energy storage, regulation, distribution, and harnessing, from concept through detailed design, prototyping, qualification, integration, and on-orbit operations.
  • Build and maintain power and energy budgets across mission phases and orbital conditions, including eclipse versus insolation, peak versus average loads, safe mode, and beginning- to end-of-life margins.
  • Size, specify, and/or design solar arrays, including cell and string selection, substrate and layout, deployment, sun-pointing and solar array drive assembly considerations, and degradation and end-of-life performance.
  • Define the battery system, including lithium-ion cell selection, pack and module design, charge and discharge regulation, depth-of-discharge and cycle-life budgeting, thermal management, and cell-level safety and protection.
  • Design or specify the power distribution and conditioning unit, including bus architecture and regulation topology, direct energy transfer versus maximum power point tracking or peak power tracking, switching, current limiting, fusing, inrush, electromagnetic interference and compatibility, and fault protection.
  • Design the spacecraft harness, including wire-gauge sizing and derating, shielding, grounding and bonding architecture, connector selection, routing, and mass and loss budgets.
  • Perform reliability and worst-case analysis, including worst-case circuit analysis, parts-stress and derating, failure mode and effects analysis, and fault management; identify and retire single-point failures across the power system.
  • Select electrical, electronic, and electromechanical and radiation-tolerant parts, own the electrical power system parts list, and manage derating, obsolescence, and lead-time risk.
  • Lead electrical power system functional testing, design electrical ground support equipment and test automation, and run thermal vacuum, vibration, and electromagnetic-interference environmental campaigns while supporting spacecraft-level integration and test.
  • Drive make-or-buy decisions, evaluate and manage vendors, and carry electrical power system deliverables through preliminary and critical design reviews and through flight.
  • Define requirements, loads, interfaces, error budgets, and verification plans at component, subsystem, and system levels.
  • Build and test prototypes and power testbeds, analyze failures, and drive root-cause resolution and design iteration.
  • Work cross-functionally with systems, thermal, controls and attitude determination and control, avionics, propulsion, structures, software, and manufacturing teams to close interfaces and deliver an integrated flight system.
  • Establish electrical power system processes, tooling, and documentation from scratch, and mentor and grow the power team as it scales.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience designing power systems for space, vacuum, or other harsh environments, including thermal qualification, vibration, and radiation effects.
  • Experience with space-qualified battery design and safety, including battery management systems, cell-level protection, lithium-ion safety, and thermal-runaway mitigation.
  • Deep maximum power point tracking or peak-power-tracking design experience.
  • Familiarity with radiation-tolerant parts selection and derating standards, such as NASA JSC 20793, ECSS, or AIAA electrical power system practices.
  • Experience designing or procuring solar arrays, including sizing, string design, and interfaces to deployment mechanisms.
  • Experience with harness design, grounding and bonding architecture, and electromagnetic interference and compatibility.
  • Printed circuit board layout for power electronics and harness fabrication and inspection experience.
  • Experience with requirements verification, formal hardware qualification, and verification and validation processes.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle management tools and configuration-managed hardware development.
  • Experience transitioning hardware from prototype to flight production.
  • Familiarity with early-stage startups or founding teams.

About the company

Pillar Space offers reusable satellites in orbit that act as rentable infrastructure for other companies’ payloads. A customer launches a payload in a standard adapter, and Pillar Space’s satellite autonomously docks with it in low Earth orbit to supply power, data, thermal management, mobility, and mission operations for the lease, with an optional capsule return to Earth. It differentiates itself by providing on-orbit service via autonomous docking instead of building the customer’s own spacecraft, supported by a team with experience from Northrop Grumman, SpaceX, and Impulse Space and backers including South Park Commons. The goal is to provide persistent, ready-to-use orbital infrastructure that lowers the cost and complexity of conducting microgravity experiments and manufacturing in space, aiming for a first mission window in 2028.

What believers are saying

  • South Park Commons highlighted Pillar in July 2026, signaling elite early validation.
  • Pillar’s website says UPLINK ACQUIRED PILLAR-01 NOMINAL, implying active mission progress.
  • Microgravity manufacturing demand strengthened in 2026 through Varda launches and BioOrbit programs.

What critics are saying

  • No disclosed funding in 2026 leaves a capital-intensive hardware program dangerously undercapitalized.
  • Northrop Grumman’s MRV launched July 2026, intensifying servicing competition before Pillar’s 2028 debut.
  • If 2028 slips, customers choose Vast, Varda, or Northrop; Pillar loses the category.

What makes Pillar Space unique

  • Only commercial team docked and undocked spacecraft three times, per Pillar and SPC.
  • Pillar sells reusable orbital infrastructure, not one-off missions, with power, data, thermal, mobility.
  • FIRST mission window 2028 targets rent-time-on-orbit demand before competitors scale.
