Huntington National Bank plans to close six Houston-area branches after major acquisitions.

Huntington National Bank plans to close six Houston-area branches after major acquisitions. By Chandler France - Reporter, Houston Business Journal Oct 6, 2026 Story highlights. * Huntington National Bank will close six Houston-area branches amid the bank's focus on larger growth plans. * The branches slated for closure include locations in the Galleria area, Friendswood, Sugar Land and The Woodlands. * The closures come after Huntington's acquisitions of Veritex Community Bank and Cadence Bank. Columbus, Ohio-based Huntington Bancshares Inc. (Nasdaq: HBAN), the parent company of Huntington National Bank, will close several Houston-area branches amid the bank's focus on larger growth plans. Huntington filed applications with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to close six branches in the Greater Houston area. Huntington confirmed that each location is slated to close in mid-December. The moves come after the bank's acquisitions of Veritex Community Bank and Cadence Bank, the latter of which closed in February. The branches slated for closure are at: GET TO KNOW YOUR CITY Find Local Events Near You Connect with a community of local professionals. * 699 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood * 4660 Sweetwater Blvd., Sugar Land * 4920-A San Felipe St., Houston * 7500 San Felipe St., Houston * 5253 Hollister St., Houston * 1925 Hughes Landing Blvd., Suite 200, The Woodlands All employees at the closing branches have been offered and accepted roles at nearby branches, Huntington said. Huntington also plans to open one Houston-area branch - at 14025 Northwest Freeway - in the first quarter of 2027, the bank said. The closures and opening will leave the bank with 29 branches in the region. Additionally, Huntington expects to open seven branches across Texas beginning early next year, though the bank does not have market-specific details to share at this time. "Texas remains one of Huntington's most important growth markets," Huntington wrote in a statement. "Following its recent partnerships with Veritex and Cadence Bank, which brought its combined branch networks together, several of its branches are now located in close proximity to one another. "With that in mind, we are repositioning six branches in the Houston area - consolidating locations where customers already have convenient access to another nearby Huntington branch." The move to close the branches comes after Brant Standridge, Huntington's president of consumer and regional banking, previously told the Houston Business Journal that the bank may close a handful of legacy Cadence or Veritex branches in Texas. However, at the time, he added that the bank's plan is to grow its branch footprint in Texas, including in Houston. "Frankly, we'll want more, not less, so our intention would be to expand that number over time, not reduce that number over time," Standridge said in a July interview after the conversion of the Cadence deal. He also added: "We don't have plans on the table at this moment that we've announced, but we certainly feel that we will need a larger branch presence in Houston. Houston is a market that we will want to invest significantly in." Following its multibillion-dollar acquisitions of Cadence and Vertiex, Huntington is now the seventh-largest bank in the Houston region, based on its approximately $7.37 billion in local deposits as of June 30, 2026. The bank's local deposits are up 16.3% compared to the amount Cadence had in 2025.
