Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electronics/Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or another appropriate engineering or engineering technology field is required.
  • At least one year of engineering experience involving new process development, new products, product costs, cost reductions, capital justifications, and capital equipment acquisition is required.
  • Knowledge or experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is required.
  • Experience or knowledge with process characterization, analysis, control, and validation using statistical tools and Six Sigma methodologies is required.
  • Experience with process maps, failure mode and effects analysis, measurement systems analysis, or other risk analysis tools is required.
  • Design experience in products, fixturing, gauging, tooling, or similar areas is required.
  • Data analysis and critical thinking skills are required.
  • Ability to adapt and learn quickly is required.
  • Written and verbal communication skills and responsiveness are required.
  • Ability to work effectively with teams across company levels and with suppliers is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and Project, as well as product lifecycle management and revision control software, is required.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, and communicate professionally with others is required.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds is required.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement manufacturing methods and processes for new and existing products.
  • Partner with Product Development Engineers during the design phase to improve manufacturability and optimize cost and performance.
  • Lead and support process development, validation, characterization, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives through process optimization, design improvements, and capital equipment projects.
  • Collaborate with Production, Quality, Tool Design, Tool and Die, Maintenance, and suppliers to establish efficient manufacturing solutions.
  • Support risk management activities, including risk analysis, evaluation, mitigation, and control.
  • Create and refine manufacturing specifications, process documentation, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Use statistical tools and data analysis techniques to evaluate process capability and performance.
  • Manage multiple project priorities while contributing to new product introductions and manufacturing excellence initiatives.
Desired Qualifications
  • Process experience or knowledge with machining metals or plastics, including lathes, mills, computer numerical control, electrical discharge machining, and multi-axis equipment; casting; forging; grinding; finishing; assembly; or similar processes.
  • Lean manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with statistical software such as Minitab.
  • Experience with three-dimensional solid modeling software such as AutoCAD, Unigraphics, or SolidWorks.

Smith+Nephew has launched the next generation LEAF Patient Monitoring System in the US, a pressure injury prevention platform designed to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs). The cloud-hosted system uses wearable sensors to monitor patient mobility and provide real-time turn status updates, improving workflow efficiency and protocol adherence. HAPIs cause approximately 60,000 annual deaths in the US and cost the economy $26.8 billion yearly. The LEAF system has demonstrated a 73% reduction in HAPI odds compared to standard care and delivers up to $1.8 million in estimated savings per critical care facility. The enhanced platform features an improved user interface developed with nursing teams and integrates seamlessly with hospital electronic medical records.
