About the job

Requirements
  • Experience managing engineers directly, ideally five or more on a product or platform team, with examples of performance improvement and performance management.
  • A credible engineering background, including having shipped production software and being able to read a pull request, evaluate a design document, and challenge estimates.
  • A track record of improving predictable delivery under management.
  • Fluency with modern AI product development, including evaluations, experiment design, dataset curation, and use of AI in engineering workflows.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and high-complexity domains, including building domain understanding of mortgage origination.
  • Strong product partnership skills, including engaging with the rationale for work, challenging weak requirements, and communicating with non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Clear, specific written communication for reviews, escalations, and updates in a remote-first environment.
  • Ability to give direct, timely, and considerate feedback, including having difficult conversations early.
  • Operational and reliability knowledge, including service-level objectives, incident response, postmortems, and reducing team toil.
  • Ability to identify security risks and protect sensitive personal data.
  • Experience hiring and onboarding in a growing organization, including interviewing and closing candidates.
Responsibilities
  • Own the engineering pod’s overall performance and clarify priorities, ownership, and expectations.
  • Own the pod’s operating cadence, including planning, retrospectives, and follow-through.
  • Remove blockers and keep engineers focused on high-leverage work.
  • Maintain high standards for accountability, autonomy, and psychological safety.
  • Be accountable for pod delivery and understand the roadmap well enough to identify risks.
  • Intervene when projects are stalled, poorly scoped, or under-owned, including when an engineer is blocked or spinning.
  • Run weekly one-on-ones with every direct report and provide specific, continuous feedback.
  • Understand each engineer’s performance, strengths, motivation, and growth trajectory.
  • Set clear expectations and provide high performers room to increase their impact.
  • Address sustained performance gaps through direct feedback, coaching, and formal improvement plans when needed.
  • Support employee growth, write fair and well-supported performance reviews, and monitor burnout and retention risk.
  • Own onboarding for new engineers, including preparing meaningful work before their first day and supporting a high-touch first month.
  • Get new hires into production quickly and onto meaningful work.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, runbooks, and ownership boundaries to support efficient ramp-up.
  • Partner with the pod’s Product Manager to prioritize high-value work.
  • Challenge unclear, incomplete, or unnecessarily complex requirements.
  • Participate in planning and prioritization rather than simply receiving work from Product.
  • Represent engineering tradeoffs involving urgency, cost, quality, and scope to non-engineering stakeholders, and escalate persistent misalignment.
  • Partner with the Technical Lead on architecture, quality, and technical risk while protecting the lead’s capacity for technical leadership.
  • Maintain enough technical depth to challenge plans and recognize problems independently.
  • Ensure technical decisions have clear owners, are made at the appropriate level, and do not stall due to unresolved disagreement.
  • Keep technical debt and quality risks visible and actively managed.
  • Contribute as an individual contributor when doing so does not crowd out management responsibilities, and keep operational burden sustainable so incidents lead to durable improvements.
  • Know whether the pod has an appropriate mix of skills and seniority, and recommend hiring to address organizational needs.
  • Interview candidates meaningfully, vet finalists, and help close strong candidates.
  • Identify capability and leadership gaps, recommend transfers where engineers could have greater impact, and support succession planning.
  • Give the Head of Engineering an honest view of pod health and surface risks and delivery issues early.
  • Escalate problems requiring organizational help with context, options, and a recommendation.
  • Communicate dependencies and tradeoffs across pods before they become surprises.
