Requirements
  • Associate degree in veterinary technology from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited school or equivalent education and experience as defined by the Washington State Department of Health Veterinary Technician licensing requirements; and must be licensed as Veterinary Technician in the State of Washington within six months of hire.
  • Must meet the required criteria (WAC 246-935-060) to be eligible to sit for the Washington State veterinary technician exam and must pass the exam the first time it is available.
  • Must pass Washington State University radiation safety training exam on the first attempt.
  • Evening and/or weekend or overnight schedule may be required.
  • For Veterinary Technician/Specialist 2, requires one year of full-time experience as a Veterinary Technician/Specialist 1 or equivalent education/experience.
  • For Veterinary Technician/Specialist 3, requires a Bachelor’s degree in a medical, biological, or allied field, and two years of applicable experience; or graduation from a two-year veterinary technician program, and two years working with laboratory animals; or equivalent education/experience.

Responsibilities
  • Provide skilled veterinary technical support in clinical services including emergent surgery, oncology, critical care, radiology, internal medicine, community practice, and other hospital services.
  • Assist clinicians and fourth-year students in all aspects of patient care including maintaining daily patient records and recording procedures, medications, and work-up of patients.
  • Operate and troubleshoot specialty equipment (e.g., radiology, CT, MRI, ultrasound, endoscopy, radiation therapy support) and ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Administer anesthetic injections and medications, draw blood, perform nursing care, and monitor vital signs.
  • Assist with procedures such as surgery preparation, radiology, diagnostics, catheter placements, and other treatments; provide patient advocacy and client communication as needed.
  • Enter information into the hospital computer system for recording charges, procedures, anesthetic events, communications, and other information for billing.
  • Instruct and/or perform nursing care, phlebotomy, specimen collection, and diagnostic procedures as per clinicians on the service; coordinate procedures within other VTH units as needed.
  • Provide teaching and mentorship to fourth-year veterinary students and other learners.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience training and teaching students, interns and residents in specialty practice or hospital settings or academic practice.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a medical, biological, or allied field for Specialist 3 position, or equivalent education/experience as defined by the Washington State Department of Health Veterinary Technician licensing requirements (if applicable).
  • Preference for candidates with experience in oncology/chemotherapy, emergency and critical care, or radiology across a veterinary hospital setting.
