Responsibilities
  • Perform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
  • Independently perform age-appropriate histories and physical examinations.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests according to patients' age-specific needs.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Implement interventions to help patients regain or maintain physiologic stability.
  • Provide care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Facilitate patient transitions between healthcare settings, including admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members and make appropriate referrals.
  • Provide educational tools to support staff, patient, and family decision-making.
  • Safeguard University assets and comply with University and unit-level policies and procedures.
  • Initiate admissions, orders, and discharges and perform comprehensive patient examinations.
  • Review medical records and laboratory reports, interpret diagnostic tests, formulate risk assessments and surgical plans with the supervising physician, and document in the electronic medical record.
  • Order, perform, and monitor diagnostic tests, including laboratory tests, X-rays, immunizations, microscopic examinations, electrocardiograms, and other appropriate tests.
  • Identify, monitor, manage, and evaluate acute and chronic medical, surgical, and interventional conditions for the specific patient population.
  • Collaborate with the supervising physician in making recommendations.
  • Provide education and counseling to patients, families, and community groups about health conditions.
  • Prescribe lifestyle modifications according to patients' health problems.
  • Initiate referrals to services including physical, occupational, and respiratory therapy.
  • Report incidents in the event reporting system.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities according to Joint Commission standards.
  • Initiate referrals and consultations with other healthcare professionals within the facility or community.
  • Discharge patients with appropriate orders, teaching, prescriptions, and summaries when appropriate.
  • Act as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Liaise between nursing and medical services to ensure follow-through for pre-operative patients.
  • Act as a preceptor for student nurse practitioners.
  • Triage patients and physician referral phone calls.
  • Listen to patients, families, and significant others and demonstrate sensitivity and awareness of their needs.
  • Follow through to ensure established expectations are satisfied.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, employee health procedures, and federal, state, regulatory, and accrediting standards.
  • Provide ongoing clinical management for patients in the UHealth preoperative Assessment Center.
  • Participate in professional growth and development activities and complete mandatory in-services and computer-based learning requirements.
  • Recognize signs of abuse or neglect and report findings to a physician.
