About the job

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience in platform security and cyber defense.
  • Demonstrated ability to find security flaws and assess systems from an attacker's perspective.
  • Strong understanding of offensive security and adversarial risk.
  • Experience shipping secure software to production.
  • Sound judgment in identifying and addressing important security vulnerabilities.
  • Ability to reduce risk through secure design and simplicity, including least privilege, defense in depth, and minimizing complexity.
Responsibilities
  • Shape the platform's end-to-end security architecture, covering data and credential handling, agent execution, and customer deployments.
  • Lead threat modeling and secure design reviews; identify and prioritize relevant risks, attack surfaces, and assumptions.
  • Drive the offensive security program by continually testing the platform, agents, and pipelines against expected adversaries.
  • Build tooling, automation, and detections to scale security, including agent-based defensive systems.
  • Partner with engineers across the company to establish secure-by-default practices and reduce risk through better design.
  • Own the security guarantees presented to enterprise customers and their CISOs.
  • Lead incident response, including detection, containment, communication, and durable fixes.
  • Build the security teams as the company grows.
Desired Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience securing complex cloud and multi-tenant environments, especially environments deployed inside customer virtual private clouds.
  • Familiarity with AI- and agent-specific risks, including prompt injection, tool-use abuse, and data or model exfiltration.
  • Background in offensive security, vulnerability research, or red teaming against cloud or AI systems.
  • Experience using large language models to accelerate security workflows such as detection, investigation, triage, or automated response.
  • Track record of completing compliance programs such as SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, or FedRAMP as engineering efforts.
  • Previous experience as a founder, security lead, or early engineer at a zero-to-one company.

About the company

Applied Compute builds custom AI models and in-house AI agents for enterprises, a concept called Specific Intelligence. They train proprietary AI on a company’s own data and fine-tune it for specific workflows, operating on a large GPU cluster with an integrated training stack, agent platform, and development tools. They also embed engineers within customer teams to move from idea to deployed solutions in days, not months. Their goal is to give enterprises a competitive edge by deploying production-ready, specialized AI that deeply integrates into operations and is difficult for others to replicate.

What believers are saying

  • Annualized revenue reached about $50 million by August 2026, nearly quadruple November levels.
  • AC2 launched in August 2026 and entered private beta with broad open-model support.
  • Customer list spans DoorDash, Cognition, Mercor, Harvey, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, validating enterprise demand.

What critics are saying

  • Open-source model vendors compress margins; customers can replicate workflows with cheaper infrastructure quickly.
  • A $3 billion valuation in August 2026 demands flawless growth and retention from a 17-person team.
  • If OpenAI, Microsoft, or Anthropic ship better enterprise agents, Applied Compute loses its wedge.

What makes Applied Compute unique

  • Former OpenAI researchers Yash Patil, Rhythm Garg, and Linden Li launched it in 2025.
  • AC2 unifies training, serving, and production feedback for open models in one stack.
  • Applied Compute embeds engineers inside customers like DoorDash, Cognition, Mercor, and Microsoft.
