About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Tech selloff wipes $1T off Nasdaq 100 as Intel plunges 30% on AI spending fears

Big Tech stocks fell sharply this week as investors worried that heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI) won't pay off soon. The Nasdaq 100 dropped roughly 4%, wiping out more than $1 trillion in value, while the S&P 500 fell more than 2% on Friday afternoon. Intel's stock plunged more than 30% to roughly $62 after it gave a weak fourth-quarter outlook. ServiceNow fell 27% on Thursday after weaker-than-expected third-quarter results. Amazon, Alphabet and Meta also dropped after earnings; Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42 billion. S&P 500 earnings growth has slipped to roughly 26% from 32% in the second quarter. Some investors are trimming tech gains to buy cheaper stocks elsewhere, though analysts such as Dan Ives remain optimistic about tech's long-term prospects.

Investors balk as Big Tech's $740B AI spending spree drains free cash flow

Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft plan to spend more than $740 billion on capital expenditure this year, mostly on AI data centres and chips. Investors, once supportive, are growing wary of negative free cash flow, rising debt, and uncertain returns. The Nasdaq fell 2.9% on Friday. Alphabet dropped 12% on Thursday, its worst day on record, wiping out $500 billion in market value. Amazon fell 7% and Meta 10%. Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion in the third quarter, and Amazon $42.4 billion over 12 months. Meta's was negative $2.1 billion. Microsoft was the exception, with positive $18.6 billion. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle raised a combined $326 billion in debt in 2026, triple last year's amount. The strain could complicate Anthropic's planned IPO.

Intel dropped more than 5% after it warned of slowing demand for personal computers. Advanced Micro Devices fell 11%, Broadcom 5%, and Nvidia 4%. AI's $1.6T spending spree hinges on the bond market, not stocks

Big Tech shares tumbled this week as investors questioned the cost of building AI infrastructure. Google had its worst day ever, while Intel fell more than on any day since the Nixon administration. The Nasdaq is just over a percentage point from a 10% correction. Yet spending continues. AI investment has reached $1.6 trillion since 2023 and is expected to hit $1 trillion a year for about a decade, according to JPMorgan. The bond market is funding much of it. Goldman Sachs expects hyperscalers to issue about $250 billion in bonds this year and estimates $510 billion of investment-grade debt is available to them. The key question, the analysis argues, is how long lenders will keep financing the spree. Rising yields could lift borrowing costs, as CoreWeave's bonds, which surged to 15%, show.

Nasdaq falls 2.86% as AI trade unravels, Intel plunges 29% and Amazon burns $42.4B

US stocks fell sharply on Friday as investors pulled back from the AI trade over spending fears. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.86%, its worst session since June, while the S&P 500 fell 1.82% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.09%. Amazon slid after reporting negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion over the past 12 months and signalling higher AI spending. Intel plunged 29%, its worst day since the 1970s, after weak fourth-quarter guidance. Intel expects revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, despite third-quarter revenue rising 21% to $16.5 billion. Its data centre and AI division grew 78% to $7.3 billion. Mark Vena, chief executive officer of SmartTech Research, said investors are losing patience with AI spending that has "a vague payback date.
