Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • An active New York EMT-B or EMT-CC certification is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • NIMS ICS-100 and IS-700 coursework is required.
  • Must safely lift, carry, and balance up to 150 pounds without assistance and up to 300 pounds with assistance.
  • Must demonstrate competency in patient assessment and handling emergencies using Basic Life Support equipment and techniques.
  • Must perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, control bleeding, provide non-invasive treatment of hypoperfusion, stabilize and immobilize injured bones and the spine, manage environmental emergencies, and provide emergency childbirth care.
  • Must use an automatic external defibrillator.
  • Must assist patients with self-administration or administer emergency medications according to state or local protocols.
Responsibilities
  • Respond to dispatched calls.
  • Read maps and drive the ambulance to emergency sites using the most expeditious route permitted by weather and road conditions.
  • Observe all traffic ordinances and regulations.
  • Use appropriate body substance isolation procedures.
  • Assess scene safety, gain access to patients, and assess the extent of injury or illness.
  • Extricate patients from entrapment.
  • Communicate with the dispatcher to request additional assistance or services as necessary.
  • Determine the nature of illness or injury and inspect for medical identification emblems to aid in care.
  • Use prescribed techniques and equipment to provide patient care and provide additional emergency care following established protocols.
  • Assess and monitor patients' vital signs and general appearance for changes.
  • Determine patient status and priority for emergency care using established criteria.
  • Reassure patients, family members, and bystanders.
  • Assist with lifting, carrying, and properly loading patients into the ambulance.
  • Determine the appropriate medical facility for patient transport and transport patients while providing ongoing medical care as necessary.
  • Report the nature of injuries or illnesses to receiving facilities.
  • Request medical direction from the medical control physician and carry out medical control orders as appropriate.
  • Assist in moving patients from the ambulance into the medical facility.
  • Report verbally and in writing observations of patients' emergencies and care provided.
  • Comply with regulations for handling deceased persons, notify authorities, and arrange for protection of property and evidence at the scene.
  • Replace supplies and properly dispose of medical waste.
  • Clean contaminated equipment according to established guidelines and policies.
  • Check all equipment for future readiness.
  • Maintain the ambulance in operable condition and ensure its cleanliness and organization.
  • Check operator-maintainable fluid, fuel, and air-pressure levels to determine vehicle readiness.
  • Maintain familiarity with all specialized equipment.
  • Complete all required documentation.
