Responsibilities
  • Provide primary ophthalmic care to patients and act as a clinical assistant to the physician.
  • Perform complete ophthalmic histories and preliminary examinations, including refraction, visual field testing, A-Scan Biometry (IOL Master), pachymetry, PAM evaluation, color testing, and contact lens evaluation.
  • Verify patient information by interviewing patients, recording medical histories, and confirming the purpose of visits.
  • Accurately record patient information in the electronic medical record system according to established standards and physician requirements.
  • Check patients' eyes by observing pupils, muscle function, visual acuity, extraocular movements, and blood pressure when requested by the physician.
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmology examinations by dilating pupils and identifying changes in visual acuity, elevated extraocular pressure, or blood pressure, then communicate results to the attending physician.
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidentiality by safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostic and procedure coding, and protecting confidential information.
  • Counsel patients by communicating physician orders and instructions regarding eye drops, contact lenses, drugs, surgery, and specialty imaging.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
  • Keep equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and promptly reporting equipment issues.
  • Process prescription refill requests.
  • Perform the established number of patient work-ups within standard times while maintaining quality customer service.
  • Maintain stock in examination rooms according to standard inventory levels and physician preferences.
  • Maintain minor procedure stock and sterilize instruments.
  • Set up and prepare minor procedures, including setting a sterile tray and maintaining a sterile field.
Desired Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience in ophthalmology is preferred.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician certification is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers is preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including listening, are preferred.
