Requirements
  • Possess, at minimum, a nursing degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Have training in rehabilitative and restorative nursing practices.
  • Have two or more years of experience, preferably in a long-term care facility.
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English, including technical procedures and policy and procedure manuals.
  • Apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Make independent decisions, solve practical problems, and exercise leadership and supervisory ability.
  • Plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary to provide quality care.
  • Possess the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to residents.
  • Understand nursing and medical practices and procedures, and the laws, regulations, and guidelines applicable to nursing care facilities.
  • Possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a registered nurse in the state.
  • Hold current CPR certification.
  • Maintain required continuing education and licensing and remain in good standing with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Meet the facility's physical, health, safety, mobility, lifting, communication, and emotional requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience with PCC are preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during the assigned tour of duty.
  • Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing nursing activities and maintaining nursing policies, procedures, manuals, and reference materials.
  • Ensure nursing personnel comply with procedures, job descriptions, policies, dress codes, safety standards, infection-control procedures, and resident care requirements.
  • Prepare reports, recommendations, medical forms, evaluations, studies, charting, accident and incident reports, and committee materials.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident services and participate in facility surveys, quality assurance activities, committee meetings, care plan meetings, discharge planning, and infection-control programs.
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge residents and coordinate related notifications, transportation, and funeral-home contact when necessary.
  • Ensure adequate staffing of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, and nurse aide trainees for each shift.
  • Develop work assignments, delegate authority and accountability to charge nurses, monitor attendance and staffing, and conduct daily rounds.
  • Review complaints and grievances, participate in employee performance evaluations, recommend staffing changes and disciplinary actions, and maintain effective relationships with departments and families.
  • Inform staff about new admissions and ensure rooms are ready; greet and escort residents as needed.
  • Make physician rounds, encourage timely physician documentation, and consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • Visit residents daily, evaluate physical and emotional status, provide direct nursing care, and ensure qualified personnel provide care.
  • Start intravenous lines, collect specimens, take vital signs, monitor seriously ill residents, and report changes in condition.
  • Review nursing notes, medication cards, treatment schedules, and care plans for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
  • Authorize restraints when necessary and ensure medication administration, storage, treatment schedules, and supplies comply with facility procedures.
  • Inspect nursing and resident care areas, ensure cleanliness and sanitation, and monitor hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, hazardous materials, fire safety, and disaster preparedness.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain resident assessments, written care plans, minimum data set processes, and related reviews.
  • Develop and conduct in-service training, assist with annual training programs, provide clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees, and participate in continuing education.
  • Recommend department equipment and supply needs, maintain adequate stock, support preventive maintenance, and ensure safe and authorized equipment operation.
  • Recommend adjustments to nursing services based on economic conditions and report suspected fraud involving false billings, cost reports, or kickbacks.
