Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • At least 3 years of experience managing accountants, including assigning work, reviewing reconciliations, and developing team members.
  • Demonstrated experience building accounting processes from scratch and/or significantly modernizing existing processes, with a focus on efficiency and appropriate controls.
  • Experience integrating acquired companies, including opening balance sheets, post-close cleanup, and working across a variety of data sources and technologies.
  • A hands-on approach and willingness to operate as part of a lean initial team consisting of the employee and the Corporate Controller.
  • Working knowledge of accounting matters common to small operating businesses, including inventory and cost of goods sold, job costing and work in progress, fixed assets, accruals, and payroll.
  • Ability to explain profit and loss statements, balance sheets, cash flow, and aging reports to individuals without a financial background.
  • Ability to work effectively in an ambiguous, build-oriented environment where the systems, team, and playbook are still taking shape.
  • Interest in providing financial expertise to small businesses and supporting their growth.
  • Interest in helping small businesses remain locally owned.
Responsibilities
  • Own the monthly close for portfolio companies, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, profit and loss flux commentary, and portfolio-level reporting, with a target of closing every month in five business days.
  • Create the pre- and post-acquisition accounting integration playbook, including supporting quality of earnings analysis, cash-to-accrual conversions, and purchase price allocations; opening operating bank accounts; bringing opening balance sheets, typically from QuickBooks Online, into the company's enterprise resource planning system; and transitioning newly acquired businesses onto the company's accounting processes and technology.
  • Design and document operating company internal controls, including approvals, segregation of duties, cash and banking controls, and vendor setup.
  • Use technology and automation, including bank rules, accounts payable automation, expense management, close software, and artificial intelligence tools, to maintain a lean team and accelerate the close process.
  • Hire, onboard, train, and manage Portfolio Accountants, including assigning workloads, reviewing work, and supporting professional development.
  • Meet regularly with operator chief executive officers to explain monthly results in clear, practical terms, including what drove revenue, margin, and cash performance and what actions should follow.
  • Partner with the Portfolio Growth team on operating key performance indicators, budgets, and performance reviews.
  • Support the Controller with audit, tax, treasury, and payroll needs by delivering clean, well-documented operating company financials and supporting schedules.
  • Continuously improve the accounting playbook as the company acquires businesses across new industries.
Desired Qualifications
  • Active certified public accountant license.
  • Experience working within private equity, a holding company, a multi-entity roll-up, or another highly acquisitive organization.
  • Experience preparing or analyzing quality of earnings reports and purchase price allocations and converting small-business financials from cash to accrual accounting.
  • Industry experience in construction, the trades, distribution, manufacturing, or retail.
  • Hands-on experience with tools such as Ramp, HubSpot, Gusto, and field-service platforms such as Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan.

What believers are saying

  • CFO Michael Friedman joined June 2026 after a fundraise led by 8VC and Human Capital.
  • February 2026 brought Anne the Plumber, with Wilson Molina targeting majority ownership.
  • Mainshares’ 1,300-investor network and reporting tools still support sourcing and governance.

What critics are saying

  • No public operator has reached majority ownership, exposing a fragile, unproven conversion path.
  • Retiring-owner deal flow depends on founder trust and financing; a slowdown kills growth.
  • If American Operator cannot scale acquisitions profitably, the rebrand becomes a dead end.

What makes American Operator unique

  • American Operator buys retiring-owner businesses outright, then transfers control to operators.
  • It claims 95-plus transactions and $300 million since 2022.
  • Its 2025 Mainshares rebrand abandoned gap-equity fundraising for operate-to-own deals.

American Operator backs Wilson Molina to lead Anne the Plumber towards majority ownership

American Operator Holdings has partnered with Anne the Plumber, a residential plumbing company serving Rhode Island communities since 2014. The partnership backs Wilson Molina as chief executive officer, with a path to earn majority ownership over time. Founder Anne-Marie Rosario Flores will remain actively involved during the transition, overseeing customer relationships and mentoring the team. Molina, whom Flores has previously mentored, will lead day-to-day operations whilst maintaining the company's service standards. American Operator's model enables operators to gain majority ownership whilst preserving local control. The firm has completed over 95 small business transactions worth more than $300 million, acquiring businesses from retiring owners and partnering them with industry operators who eventually become majority owners.
