What believers are saying

  • Wawa plans nearly 100 2026 openings, including Muncie on October 1 and Pace October 8.
  • North Carolina hit 20 stores in September 2026, with 90 planned statewide.
  • Diane George's September 23 marketing appointment supports brand consistency during nationwide expansion.

What critics are saying

  • Voorhees Township's October 14 hearing keeps a Wawa project trapped in lawsuit-driven delay.
  • Winslow's September 18 opening slipped last-minute, exposing execution risk on rapid rollouts.
  • Expansion across 14 states strains service consistency; one bad rollout damages Wawa's food reputation.

What makes Wawa unique

  • Wawa pairs made-to-order food, fuel, and coffee with cult-like grand-opening rituals.
  • The 2026 store playbook still centers on 35-employee neighborhood boxes, not giant formats.
  • Its Mid-Atlantic brand carries into Florida, Tennessee, and North Carolina without rebranding.

Wawa will soon break ground at this State College site. Here's what to know.

Wawa will soon break ground at this State College site. Here's what to know. September 25, 2026 1:08 PM Gift Article Key Takeaways AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom. After years of planning, work on a Wawa convenience store in the State College area is set to begin next month. The company will host a community event at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 to break ground on a Wawa location at 169 W. Aaron Drive in Ferguson Township, the former home of the Sutliff Buick GMC Cadillac dealership and Delaney Collision Center. The occasion is expected to include samples of Wawa hoagies and coffee, remarks from company officials and updates on an opening timeline and planned job openings. For now, it remains unclear when the Wawa along North Atherton Street is expected to open. "We are thrilled to break ground in State College and get closer to opening our doors and serving our new friends and neighbors," Wawa's director of store operations, Chris Edwards, said in a statement. "We are excited to share the Wawa story, plans for growth in State College and our commitment to partnering with local nonprofit organizations that make a difference in the local communities." By filling out an online form, Wawa says members of the public have a chance to attend the groundbreaking event as "a VIP customer." The company broke ground on Centre County's first Wawa in December 2025. Steady progress at the site at the corner of Benner Pike and Eagle Point now shows an under-construction fuel canopy and the general facade for what will soon become a 6,600-square-foot Wawa convenience store. Other Wawa locations are planned for Centre Hall, as well as the corner of East College Avenue and Squirrel Drive in College Township. Neither site has broken ground as of the early fall. At a community event in September 2025, Wawa officials said they plan to invest $75 million through the development and openings of at least 10 stores in the broader State College area by 2031, resulting in the creation of at least 350 jobs. The company recently opened a location in Yeagertown, while construction is ramping up at another site in Mill Hall. Wawa's westward expansion to the State College area began taking shape in 2023, when the company first unveiled plans for a proposed location along Benner Pike. Plans followed in 2024 for another store along North Atherton Street. Finally, in July 2025, Centre County's planning commission approved a final land development plan for a Wawa store that will replace the former Snappy's convenience store along Earlystown Road in Potter Township. Wawa operates roughly 1,200 stores in 14 states and Washington, D.C. The Delaware County-headquartered company opened its first convenience store in 1964 and derives its name and logo from an indigenous word for Canadian geese.
