Electric 'flying taxi' edges closer to reality as Bristol aircraft maker strikes major deals.

Electric 'flying taxi' edges closer to reality as Bristol aircraft maker strikes major deals. Vertical Aerospace could soon move from design and testing to commercial production. A Bristol company that is developing a four-to-six seater 'flying taxi' has agreed a pair of major deals as it presses ahead with the development of its aircraft. Article continues below Vertical Aerospace, which opened a huge aircraft assembly centre at Cotswold Airport last month, has signed long-term agreements with South Korean aerospace seating firm ANH Structure and another with German navigation systems business NG LITEF, part of global corporation Northrop Grumman. Article continues below Under the deals, ANH Structure will design, develop, certify and manufacture a bespoke pilot and passenger seating system for Vertical Aerospace's Valo electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. NG LITEF, meanwhile, will supply the aircraft's inertial reference system, providing essential position, attitude and heading data to flight-critical systems. Article continues below 138205441699 Stuart Simpson, chief executive of Vertical Aerospace, said the two firms brought "specialist expertise and strong certification credentials" to the business. "Their selection adds further strength to the world-class supplier ecosystem behind Valo and supports our strategy to deliver one versatile platform across multiple cabin configurations and missions," he said. "Valo is progressing from an advanced design into an aircraft supported by the people, systems and industrial capability needed for certification and production at scale." Article continues below Vertical Aerospace was established by Ovo Energy founder Stephen Fitzpatrick a decade ago and is based on Chapel St in Bristol. The business floated on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021 and is leading the race to develop an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. Hyonsu Ahn, chief executive of ANH Structure, said: "Bond Rees is proud to work alongside Vertical on developing a seating system for Valo's cabin configurations which aligns with their vision for passenger safety and high-end customer experience. Article continues below "We look forward to leveraging our lightweight, safety-led seat architecture and certification capabilities to support the Vertical team through design, certification and production." The announcement comes just weeks after Vertical Aerospace bosses hailed the opening of the Gloucestershire Aircraft Assembly Centre as a "major milestone" for the firm, which is transitioning from prototype development and flight testing of Valo to certification and commercial production. Article continues below The company said in September that its new facility at the airport was the first stage of a planned manufacturing scale-up and would provide the capacity required to build certification-conforming aircraft as it pushes towards its target of achieving Type Certification in 2029. Vertical Aerospace is also developing electric, hybrid-electric and autonomous variants for the commercial and defence markets. The company has already agreed a number of commercial partnerships including with aerospace firms Honeywell, Syensqo and Sonaca. Article continues below It also has around 1,500 pre-orders of Valo, with customers across four continents, including American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL and Japan Airlines. Earlier this year, Vertical Aerospace secured a fresh injection of cash including $40m from US-based Mudrick Capital Management and a $25m issuance from Yorkville Advisors - two major current stakeholders.

Archer Aviation.

Archer Aviation. Battery Fire at Archer's San Jose Lab Forces Evacuation Three people were hurt and about 100 evacuated after a test pack overheated October 15, 2026 A battery test pack caught fire on Monday at Archer Aviation's battery lab in San Jose, California, after its lithium-ion cells overheated in an uncontrollable chain reaction known as thermal runaway. The fire injured three people and forced about 100 people to evacuate, Archer reported. Company co-founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said on X that the pack was a next-generation battery for "a future pipeline program," not for the company's Midnight eVTOL air taxi. Archer has not said what that program is. Its other announced programs include Thunder, a hybrid-electric autonomous defense aircraft it is developing with Anduril, and Halo, a commercial utility drone derived from Thunder. In a report to the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Archer said the incident began at 10:27 a.m. at its 77 Rio Robles facility and involved fewer than 30 Molicel lithium-ion cells. The company blamed the thermal runaway on an employee error. Local firefighters moved the pack into a suppression tank, where fire watch personnel monitored it overnight, according to the report. Three people were evaluated for their injuries and subsequently released. "On Monday, we had a small fire during routine battery testing in our 77 Rio Battery lab," an Archer spokesman told AIN in an email. "The fire was quickly extinguished and all employees were safely evacuated." In his X post, Goldstein said the team identified the root cause and resumed testing the next day. Archer has not described the employee error or the nature of the injuries. Molicel cells power Midnight. Archer has said it uses cylindrical 2170 lithium-ion cells from Taiwan-based Molicel in the proprietary battery packs that power Midnight. The aircraft carries six 800-volt packs. When it unveiled Midnight in 2022, Archer said it had developed a proprietary thermal runaway strategy for the aircraft but did not disclose how it works. In 2024, the company signed a Space Act Agreement with NASA to study the safety and performance of those cells, with some tests focused on what Archer called "extreme abuse cases." Archer has not said whether the pack that caught fire used the same Molicel cell model as Midnight. Molicel also has agreements to supply or develop cells for UK-based Vertical Aerospace's eVTOL aircraft, Munich-based Vaeridion's nine-seat Microliner, and Montreal-based Evio's 810 hybrid-electric regional airliner. The October 12 incident appears to be the first publicly reported thermal runaway incident involving Molicel cells at a U.S. eVTOL developer's facility. A known risk for electric aircraft developers. Preventing a single cell failure from spreading through a pack is a central safety challenge developers face as they work to certify electric aircraft. In January 2020, a fire that started in a ground-based battery system damaged Eviation's first Alice prototype during ground testing at Prescott Regional Airport (KPRC) in Arizona. Beta Technologies also had a battery fire in August 2022, when a reassembled lithium-ion pack caught fire in a shipping container outside its headquarters at Burlington International Airport (KBTV) in Vermont. Beta said the pack was awaiting end-of-line testing and had not been approved for flight. No one was injured, and firefighters put out the blaze in about 30 minutes. In 2021, Luminati Aerospace CEO Daniel Preston claimed that almost every major eVTOL developer had experienced a potentially catastrophic fire caused by a battery pack failure. He said his upstate New York company suffered $2.4 million in damage in 2019 when a single cell anomaly set off a chain reaction in one of its battery packs. The Rio Robles site. The 68,000-sq-ft building that Archer calls its "77 Rio Battery lab" sits a few blocks from the company's headquarters on West Tasman Drive. Archer signed a 7.5-year lease for the site in 2022, according to SEC filings, which describe it as lab space and a low-rate initial production facility. In 2024, Archer said it had installed an automated battery pack production line there that can build up to 15,000 packs per year. The line handles cell testing and loading, adhesive dispensing, laser cleaning, laser welding, and end-of-line testing, and it is meant to supply packs to Archer's high-volume aircraft factory in Covington, Georgia. Archer said in early 2024 that its San Jose test lab and manufacturing facilities were also building electric engines, assembling its first conforming Midnight aircraft, and housing its "iron bird," test rig. The 77 Rio Robles building was also unfortunately the site of a fatal accident in July 2024. According to records from the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA), two metal electrical cabinets fell from a forklift and pinned a 53-year-old electrical superintendent who worked for a contractor. He died at a hospital. Cal/OSHA cited Archer, the electrical contractor, and a rigging contractor for alleged serious violations involving forklift operations, head protection, and injury prevention programs. All three companies are contesting the citations, and Archer faces $78,300 in proposed penalties.

Why is Vertical Aerospace stock gaining today?

Why is Vertical Aerospace stock gaining today? Published Oct 09, 2026, 09:38 AM (C) Pavlo Gonchar / SOPA Images/Sipa via Reuters Connect Investing.com - Vertical Aerospace stock rose 3.4% in morning trading after Barclays initiated coverage of the eVTOL developer at Equalweight with a $1.00 price target, a rating that places the stock squarely in focus for institutional investors and implies roughly 78% upside from current levels. Prior to the Barclays initiation, the company carried five buy ratings, one hold, and two sell ratings from covering brokerages, making this new coverage a notable addition to the analyst community's attention on the name. Adding to the positive tone, Vertical Aerospace's wholly-owned subsidiary filed a patent infringement counterclaim against Archer Aviation in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on October 6, alleging that Archer's Midnight eVTOL aircraft infringes one or more claims of Vertical's U.S. patent. The filing, disclosed via an SEC 6-K report, signals that the company is actively defending its intellectual property position as competition in the eVTOL space intensifies. The broader market is providing a constructive backdrop today, with the Nasdaq Composite up 0.5% and the S&P 500 adding 0.3% as technology stocks attempt to recover from Thursday's sell-off, which had been driven by renewed concerns over AI valuations and rising oil prices. The eVTOL sector as a whole has faced persistent headwinds in recent months, and Vertical Aerospace itself received an NYSE continued listing notice in early October after its share price fell below the $1.00 minimum average threshold. Together, the Barclays initiation - which validates a fair-value case above current prices - combined with the patent counterclaim and a recovering broader market, are providing enough of a catalyst mix to lift EVTL modestly off levels near its 52-week low of $0.518, even as the stock's longer-term challenges around certification timelines and capital requirements remain firmly in view. +39.67 (+0.51%) Real-time Data · 13:21:57 Is EVTL a bargain right now?
