About the Job

Requirements

  • You have implemented novel techniques in vector similarity on a search platform with a large user base or progressed the field of academic research in vector similarity information retrieval.
  • You have professional experience with vector similarity and vector databases, and have used HNSW, IVF, or other relevant algorithms and libraries on search platforms at scale.
  • You have strong skills in core Java and are conversant in the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs, as well as features such as lambdas.
  • You have a high level of autonomy and are able to take on projects and guide them from beginning to end, covering both technical design and working with other engineers to develop needed components.
  • You are comfortable developing collaboratively, giving and receiving feedback on code, approaches, and APIs.
  • You have used several data storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Cassandra and understand how they work.
  • You have a proven track record of using AI to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and optimize code while owning the final outcomes.
  • You possess the ability to collaborate across functions and teams and transition between different projects, codebases, or teams based on business priorities.
  • You work autonomously and can drive decisions and results in a distributed team through asynchronous, direct, and transparent communication.

Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives within Elasticsearch to produce an industry-leading vector database offering focused on speed and relevance in search.
  • Contribute full time to Elasticsearch by building new search features, fixing bugs, improving code clarity, and implementing algorithms or data structures, including work close to the operating system and hardware when needed.
  • Work with a globally distributed team of experienced engineers focused on Elasticsearch vector search capabilities.
  • Develop expertise in how Elasticsearch implements vector similarity to support search relevance, answer questions in this area, and improve the implementation.
  • Work with community members worldwide on issues and pull requests, triaging and handing them off to other experts or handling them directly.
  • Write idiomatic modern Java.

Desired Qualifications

  • You have built things with Elasticsearch before.
  • You have worked with open source projects and are familiar with different source-control workflows and continuous integration.
  • You have experience with data storage technology.
  • You have experience designing, leading, and owning cross-functional initiatives.
