  • Twenty-four months of clinical nursing experience with demonstrated progressive leadership skills.
  • A Texas Registered Nurse license or compact licensure, with a permanent Texas license required within 60 days if establishing Texas residency.
  • Basic Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification or instructor certification from the American Heart Association.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification or instructor certification from the Crisis Prevention Institute within four months.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English sufficient to perform essential job functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • Strong assessment, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and role components.
  • Ability to function independently and exercise judgment when interacting with physicians, the interprofessional healthcare team, patients, and families.
  • Critical thinking and clinical judgment skills sufficient to work autonomously under the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Proficient time management skills.
  • Highly developed assessment skills and the ability to contribute to policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Knowledge of the nursing unit dashboard and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems scores.
  • Expertise in operating the electronic medical record.

Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care to a diverse patient population, including nursing assessments, assistance with examinations and treatment, and maintenance of medical records.
  • Create an environment that supports the management and delivery of safe patient care.
  • Serve as a role model and coach to department personnel and assist in developing their skills and knowledge.
  • Coach and mentor department staff in clinical and professional practice.
  • Model compassionate communication with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Lead unit and shared governance activities and assess unit needs related to practice and improvement opportunities.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for unit and hospital staff and coordinate unit and hospital-wide education in partnership with management.
  • Foster staff engagement through active listening, feedback, equitable decisions, rationale, and support of organizational goals.
  • Role model fair and consistent leadership, team dynamics, and team-building strategies through problem solving, coaching, and staff development.
  • Provide input into staff performance reviews when appropriate.
  • Mentor and resource unit staff and provide oversight for students, new employees, and preceptor assignments.
  • Identify and resolve organizational conflict, concerns, complaints, and disputes involving patients, families, physicians, and the interprofessional healthcare team.
  • Lead patient- and family-centered care standards and mentor others regarding specialty populations.
  • Audit plans of care and conduct leader rounding with patients, families, and staff.
  • Collaborate with other departments on patient process issues and drive service standards to improve patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in nurse-sensitive quality indicators and patient safety goals, audits, continuous improvement, and regulatory practice standards.
  • Coordinate nursing care throughout the shift based on patient acuity, staff skill level, and safety.
  • Facilitate patient flow through the department and ensure accurate, timely patient plans of care.
  • Work with operations associates and bed management on timely patient placement.
  • Recognize and respond to rapid responses, CERTs, emergency codes, near misses, and other safety situations.
  • Participate in initiatives to improve quality and safety scores through peer accountability, reporting near misses, and collaborating on solutions.
  • Implement department strategies for financial targets through timely documentation, reduced length of stay, optimized efficiency, minimized incidental overtime, and related departmental measures.
  • Attend daily care coordination rounds and follow up on identified concerns.
  • Manage productivity according to the staffing grid.
  • Provide input into unit resource utilization, capital and operational budget needs, staff allocation, supplies, and patient throughput.
  • Lead or participate in unit projects and shared governance activities that implement innovative practice and operational improvements.
  • Investigate and incorporate evidence-based practices for presentation to shared governance and leadership.
  • Adapt to unexpected changes and support change initiatives.
  • Expand nursing knowledge, coach staff development, and serve as a clinical resource.
  • Develop and disseminate educational resources and programs that improve quality and professional practice.
Desired Qualifications
  • Magnet certification recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course certification.
