What believers are saying

  • US corporate staff receive education support: eligible, approved graduate coursework qualifies for up to $10,000 annually.
  • Cloud demand expands: July 2026 results showed Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% year-over-year in fiscal Q4.
  • Investment has an earnings cushion: July 2026 results reported $155.2 billion consolidated operating profit for fiscal 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Performance reviews include security: every Microsoft employee must discuss their security contribution with their manager.
  • Office flexibility depends on the role: Microsoft's postings specify requirements ranging from fully remote to fully on-site.
  • Cloud capacity faces local limits: Microsoft describes power-grid delays and water constraints affecting US datacenter expansion.

What makes Microsoft unique

  • Hybrid customers stay within reach: Azure Arc manages servers across customer datacenters and competing clouds.
  • Developer reach extends beyond Azure: Microsoft's GitHub hosts code collaboration alongside AI coding tools.
  • Professional data widens its business: Microsoft owns LinkedIn's recruiting, advertising and workplace-learning network.

Microsoft fixes Windows 11 right-click menu as Windows OEM revenue falls 27%

Microsoft has begun rolling out a Windows 11 preview update that lets users customise the right-click menu, a long-standing complaint among power users. The update, KB5127936, covers Windows 11 versions 26H2 and 25H2. A new "customize menu" button lets users switch built-in commands such as Send To or Create Shortcut on or off, rearrange the main menu, and choose which third-party extensions appear. The update also adds Cloud Rebuild, which reinstalls Windows 11 from the cloud, even when the system won't boot. It works like a fresh install, so existing apps and files are not kept. The release came as Microsoft reported Windows OEM revenue down 27%. Azure grew 48%, and Microsoft Cloud rose 30%, accounting for roughly 70% of the $92.3 billion quarterly revenue.

IANS brings peer-validated cybersecurity intelligence to Microsoft Copilot via new MCP Server

IANS, a cybersecurity intelligence firm, has made its Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server for Microsoft Copilot generally available. Security teams can now use IANS data inside Copilot Chat and Copilot Cowork, without switching platforms. Users can select IANS as a source and get answers with citations linking to the underlying material. The IANS Agent offers conversations powered only by IANS intelligence. The data includes more than 4,000 summarised Ask-an-Expert calls, more than 3,500 Faculty polls, and over 300 vendor assessments. Teams can also request sessions with one of more than 170 Faculty members, all practising security practitioners. "AI is changing how security teams find answers, but not who they trust with the hard calls," said Paul Henderson, chief product officer at IANS. The tool is available to IANS clients whose subscriptions include MCP access and whose users hold Copilot licences. It is also available in Claude.

Nasdaq futures fall 1.3% as Alphabet drops 10% on $51.4B capex, Microsoft gains

US stock futures were mixed on Thursday as Alphabet fell and Microsoft rose after quarterly results. Nasdaq futures dropped 1.3% and S&P 500 futures fell 0.5%, while Dow Jones futures gained 0.3%. Alphabet shares fell more than 10% premarket after third-quarter results missed expectations. Capital expenditure reached $51.4 billion, up $6.5 billion on the previous quarter, and advertising revenue growth slowed to a five-quarter low. Microsoft rose after revenue climbed 19% to $92.28 billion, with Azure revenue up 48%. Adjusted earnings were $4.89 per share. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said interest rates "affect, directly or indirectly, almost everything," casting doubt on the view that AI investment is immune to higher borrowing costs. Netflix walks away from Xbox licensing deal after Microsoft asks $800M versus $500M offer

Netflix reportedly walked away from a deal for seven years of exclusive film and TV rights to Microsoft's Xbox game library, which includes Halo and Gears of War. Puck News reported that Netflix first offered $500 million, but Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma asked for $800 million. Netflix's chief financial officer, Spencer Neumann, rejected the counter as too expensive. The offer was pulled after a mid-October restructuring that cut about 1,000 jobs and saw content chief Bela Bajaria leave. Former Disney executive Peter Rice replaced her. Xbox is now pursuing several smaller deals. Amazon gets "Fallout" Season 3, Paramount Pictures gets a "Call of Duty" movie, and Netflix keeps "Gears of War" and "Diablo." Netflix's third-quarter revenue rose 12% to $12.9 billion, but it cut its 2026 advertising forecast from $3 billion to $2.7 billion.

Microsoft posts $36.6B quarterly profit days after offering buyouts to 60,000 workers

Microsoft said profit for the three months to the end of September jumped to more than $36.6bn, days after it announced plans to cut its workforce by more than a quarter. Quarterly revenue rose to $92.3bn, driven by strong growth in its cloud computing business. On Monday, the company said it would offer voluntary buyouts to around 60,000 workers to cut costs as it pours billions of dollars into artificial intelligence (AI). Microsoft shares rose almost 2.9% in after-hours trading in New York on Wednesday. Investors are closely watching tech firms' results to gauge whether heavy AI spending is sustainable. Chief executive Satya Nadella said the company is "translating our innovation into growing adoption and real-world impact across every industry.
