Requirements
- MA candidates must be high school graduates or equivalent.
- CMA candidates must be high school graduates or equivalent and graduates of an accredited Medical Assistant Training program.
- LPN candidates must complete an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program.
- No prior experience is required.
- LPN candidates must hold or be eligible for state licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
- All classifications must obtain Basic Life Support certification within three months of appointment.
- CMA candidates must obtain certification within six months of appointment from an accepted national examination agency: American Association of Medical Assistants, American Registry of Medical Assistants, National Center for Competency Testing, or National Healthcare Association.
Responsibilities
- Manage patient flow and perform patient rooming workflows.
- Demonstrate and apply infection-control, sterile, and aseptic techniques when setting up for or assisting with procedures.
- Enter and process diagnostic and office-procedure orders and assist with scheduling procedures.
- Assist medical providers with processing diagnostic results.
- Administer medications by all routes except intravenous infusion, recognize and report medication effects and side effects, and provide appropriate patient instruction.
- Collect and accurately record telephone information and relay it to the medical provider or nurse in a timely manner.
- Clean, prepare, and autoclave equipment and instruments for sterilization according to infection-control policies and procedures.
- Check inventory and order supplies as needed.
- Provide patient education under the direction of a medical provider or nurse.
- Perform delegated physician and nursing acts consistent with education, training, competency, and experience.
- Schedule referrals and outpatient diagnostic procedures, provide patient-preparation information, and coordinate prior authorizations.
- Collect laboratory samples.
- Perform basic computer scheduling, rescheduling, cancellation, and appointment-coordination duties as required by the location or department.
- Assist in emergency situations and cross-train and staff other clinics as needed.
- Participate in site process-improvement teams.
- Perform other required duties.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working in a healthcare setting.
- MA candidates may hold certification from an accepted national examination agency: American Association of Medical Assistants, American Registry of Medical Assistants, National Center for Competency Testing, or National Healthcare Association.
- LPN candidates may hold Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
