Requirements
  • Experience working with children in a camp or outdoor recreational setting is required.
  • Understanding of childhood development and group management in a general camp setting is required.
  • Camp leadership experience is required.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certification is required.
  • Must successfully complete YMCA Camp Erdman’s High Ropes Facilitator Training.
  • A TB test is required.
  • Must uphold professional boundaries, complete mandatory Praesidium training, report concerns, and successfully complete comprehensive background screening, including criminal and sex offender checks.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise and lead safe Outdoor Education activities emphasizing Environmental Education and Team Building.
  • Communicate with teachers during their trip to Camp Erdman.
  • Orient teachers upon arrival and answer their questions.
  • Facilitate programs and set up or lead evening programs for school groups.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for a school throughout its trip to Camp Erdman.
  • Understand and support the YMCA’s philosophy, goals, and objectives.
  • Develop positive and meaningful relationships with youth and staff members.
  • Coach and mentor Program Instructors.
  • Provide children opportunities to make new friends and learn new activities.
  • Support camper development and growth.
  • Monitor health and safety concerns.
  • Ensure every camper is included in the group.
  • Follow program policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Promote teamwork among staff and children.
  • Attend assigned training, meetings, and YMCA functions.
  • Live on-site at Camp Erdman in housing assigned by the Camp Director of School and Retreat Programs.
  • Work extended hours, including some evening and weekend activities or training.
  • Use camp supplies and recreational equipment appropriately.
  • Perform other duties as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • College experience is preferred.
  • Ropes facilitation experience is preferred.
  • YMCA or Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is preferred.
