About the company

Amazon runs the largest online store in the United States and rents cloud computing to businesses and governments through Amazon Web Services. AWS pioneered renting computing power over the internet, and Amazon built its own delivery network to get orders to customers quickly. Shoppers buy from Amazon and from independent sellers on its store, and Prime members pay a subscription for fast free shipping, streaming video and music, and other perks. AWS rents out computing power, storage, databases, and AI tools so companies can run software without owning servers, and Amazon also makes Kindle e-readers and Echo speakers with the Alexa assistant. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994, and it is based in Seattle, Washington.

What believers are saying

  • AI drives growth: AWS's AI and custom-chip sales each more than doubled, passing $25 billion a year by June 2026.
  • Stock grants gained value: shares hit a record in August 2026, making Amazon the fifth company to reach $3 trillion.
  • Ads are a third engine beside stores and AWS: they grew 26% to $19.8 billion in the June 2026 quarter.

What critics are saying

  • AWS's lead is shrinking: in the June 2026 quarter, Google Cloud grew 82% and Microsoft's Azure 43%, versus AWS's 37%.
  • Job security has slipped: Amazon cut 30,000 corporate jobs in October 2025 and January 2026 to reduce management layers.
  • Expect five office days a week: Amazon ended its three-day hybrid policy for corporate staff in January 2025.

What makes Amazon unique

  • Most of Amazon's profit comes from cloud: AWS made 21% of sales but 60% of operating profit in mid-2026.
  • Amazon is America's biggest parcel carrier by volume: it handled 6.9 billion packages in 2025, more than the Postal Service.
  • Writing matters more than slides: Amazon meetings open with silent reading of a six-page memo instead of PowerPoint.

Intel plunges 23% and Amazon falls 7% as weak tech earnings hit US futures

US stock futures fell late Thursday after weak earnings from Intel and Amazon. As of 23:44 EDT, Nasdaq-100 futures were down more than 2%, S&P 500 futures fell 0.95%, and Dow futures slipped 0.17%. Intel shares tumbled more than 23% after hours on a weak fourth-quarter forecast and slumping personal computer sales. A memory chip shortage pushed up device prices and hurt demand, even though third-quarter sales rose 21% to $16.5 billion. Amazon shares dropped more than 7% after quarterly spending on property and equipment topped $77 billion, mostly for data centres. Free cash outflow reached $42.4 billion, while online sales grew just 2%. The losses spread to other chipmakers, including Nvidia, Micron, Broadcom, and Advanced Micro Devices. Brent crude rose above $116 a barrel amid tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Amazon and Intel results deepen AI cost fears as Microsoft sells $25B debt and Intel sinks 18%

Amazon and Intel results deepened Wall Street's worries about the cost of the AI boom. Amazon forecast holiday-quarter sales below expectations, and its shares fell 7% after hours. Intel shares dropped 18% after it flagged "near term headwinds across the PC industry" as a memory chip shortage raised its costs. Heavy data-centre spending has turned once debt-light tech giants into big borrowers. Alphabet and Meta burned cash in the September quarter, while Microsoft sold $25 billion in debt. A factory explosion in Israel shut an Intel plant for two weeks, costing it roughly $600 million in lost revenue over two quarters. HP and Dell fell 8% and 6.8%. AMD dropped 4% and Broadcom 2%.

Prime Video is now profitable, with revenue run rate in the tens of billions, says Jassy

Amazon's Prime Video now has a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars and is profitable, chief executive officer Andy Jassy said on Thursday's quarterly earnings call. He had said in May that the service was profitable, but the revenue figure is new. Amazon MGM Studios, bought four years ago for $8.5 billion, has taken in more than $1.2 billion in global box office sales this year. Project Hail Mary, released in March, grossed an estimated $684 million worldwide, making it the studio's highest-grossing film. Reacher season four drew 66 million viewers globally in its first 28 days. Season five is filming, and a sixth has been ordered. Thursday Night Football averaged 17.7 million viewers over its first six games, up 16% from last year, according to Nielsen.

Amazon's $250 Echo Studio adds a 13MP camera, with Alexa+ able to see what's in front of it

Amazon has added a 13MP camera to its Echo Studio smart speaker. The Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $250, $30 more than the camera-free version. The camera lets the speaker adjust volume as users move around a room. Owners can also check on a room remotely, and Alexa+ can identify objects, such as a cereal box, to help reorder them or explain a board game's rules. Audio hardware is largely unchanged: one 3.75-inch woofer, three full-range drivers, Dolby Atmos and the AZ3 Pro processor. Amazon also announced Advanced Room Adaptation, which tunes sound to the room's acoustics. A button turns off the microphones and camera, and an LED shows when it streams to the cloud. Amazon previously settled an FTC lawsuit over Ring privacy allegations for $5.8 million.

AdRazor launches free Amazon profit calculator covering FBA, FBM and ten European markets

AdRazor has launched a free Amazon profit calculator that shows sellers their profit per unit and break-even advertising cost of sales (ACoS) in seconds. The tool covers both Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) and Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM) across 10 European marketplaces, including the UK, Germany, and France. Sellers enter a selling price, category, fulfilment method, and cost of goods. The calculator subtracts VAT, referral fees, FBA fulfilment fees, shipping, and storage. A break-even ACoS of zero means a product loses money before any ad spend. "This calculator makes the margin visible in seconds, and it's free with no sign-up," said Michael Parker of AdRazor. Users can compare FBA and FBM costs and download results as a PDF.
