About the job

Requirements
  • A technical background in communications and signal processing, including waveform design, detection and estimation, protocol development, or channel modeling.
  • Experience with simulation or analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary, team-oriented environments.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher, with possible government background investigation requirements.
  • For the Professional level, no prior relevant work experience is required.
  • For the Intermediate Professional level, at least 2 years of relevant experience is required.
  • For the Advanced Professional level, at least 5 years of relevant experience is required.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science is required for all listed levels.
  • Eligibility to obtain a government security clearance, participation in the ARL drug testing program, and compliance with electronic and physical monitoring requirements are required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, test, and evaluate advanced signal processing algorithms and communication techniques.
  • Model and simulate communication system physical-layer protocols and waveforms.
  • Prototype communication capabilities using software-defined radios and open-source tools.
  • Contribute to waveform, modulation, and algorithm design for challenging channel environments.
  • Perform system-level analysis, theoretical evaluation, and performance assessments.
  • Document findings, prepare recommendations, and present results to sponsors.
  • Participate in field tests, demonstrations, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across ARL and with government sponsors.
  • Lead technical tasks or project components for higher-level positions.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and help shape program direction for higher-level positions.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior staff or students for higher-level positions.
  • Contribute to division-level research strategies and initiatives for higher-level positions.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree, MS or PhD, in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience with software-defined radio development, laboratory or field testing, or data analysis.
  • Programming experience in Python, C++, MATLAB, or similar languages.
  • Experience with wireless, underwater, satellite, or optical communication systems.
  • Experience with communications security, artificial intelligence or machine learning for communications, or network protocol development.
