Benchmarking drives environmental sustainability at Carle Health.

Benchmarking drives environmental sustainability at Carle Health. 09/24/2026 In June 2026, Carle Health was awarded the Greenhealth Champion Award from Practice Greenhealth, recognizing efforts to improve the environmental performance of all eight system hospitals. Practice Greenhealth is the leading healthcare sustainability organization that works directly with hospitals and health systems to deliver healthcare-specific environmental solutions. "This award celebrates our commitment to environmental sustainability and the achievement of key milestones in reducing our environmental footprint while supporting the delivery of world-class healthcare," said Anthony Corso, sustainability and energy manager, Carle Health. Celebrating advancements in sustainability highlights the importance of innovation and continuous improvement that lies at the heart of this work. The Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Awards Program allows healthcare organizations to benchmark their facilities' performance in the key areas of energy, water and waste. Benchmarking is essential because it offers a standard reference point for comparison. The Practice Greenhealth awards program allows Carle Health to measure each hospital's performance and compare them to other hospitals within the same service area and of similar size. Without benchmarking to provide context, identifying areas for improvement is just a guessing game. Benchmarking drives better decision making and allocation of resources by providing key insights into efficiency, innovation and cost effectiveness. It increases accountability and helps the system become better stewards of natural resources and the environment. With the right tools, benchmarking becomes a process that turns numbers into clear action plans with achievable goals for improvement. "We understand our patients' health is tied to the environment, and as a community partner, we need to be mindful of our impact," Nick Crompton, vice president, construction and facility services, Carle Health, said. "As we plan for the future, we will continue to prioritize sustainability within our facilities and services to create a healthier and more equitable future." Practice Greenhealth states that more hospitals and health systems are tracking emissions, setting sustainability goals, and reporting meaningful cost savings as a result. In August, they delivered custom reports comparing sustainability data from the eight Carle Health hospitals to data from more than 700 other hospitals nationwide that participated in the 2026 awards program. With energy costs and peak demand charges on the rise, improving energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. The average Carle Health hospital Energy Use Intensity (EUI), a measure of energy consumption relative to size, outperforms 71 percent of other health systems that reported their EUI data. "As trusted partners in healthcare, we understand that when we care for the environment, we contribute to a healthier community," James Leonard, MD, president and chief executive officer, Carle Health, said. "By prioritizing sustainability, we act as good stewards of our resources and demonstrate our active commitment to our communities' health." Carle Health sustainability efforts are generously supported by donations to Carle Health Center for Philanthropy. To learn more about ongoing initiatives at Carle Health, visit carle.org.

Angie Hatfield Marker appointed Vice President of Carle Health Center for Philanthropy.

Angie Hatfield Marker appointed Vice President of Carle Health Center for Philanthropy. Carle Health has named Angie Hatfield Marker as Vice President of the Carle Health Center for Philanthropy, advancing the health system's commitment to growing philanthropic support for care, innovation, and community health across all regions it serves, according to an Aug. 21 announcement. Hatfield Marker, who is currently executive director of development and campaigns at Carle Health, will begin her new role on Oct. 18. She was selected after an extensive search and will succeed Beth Katsinas, who plans to retire on Oct. 30 after nearly a decade leading the philanthropy center. The organization said Katsinas has played a pivotal role in its growth. The leadership transition comes as Carle Health continues expanding opportunities to connect donors and communities with priorities that impact patients and families throughout the system. This includes The Campaign for Carle Health, a five-year initiative aiming to raise $60 million in support of priorities across the organization. James C. Leonard, MD, President and CEO of Carle Health, said: "At its heart, philanthropy is about people coming together to improve the lives of others. Beth has helped shape a culture of generosity that has strengthened care across Carle Health and created opportunities for countless patients and families. We are grateful for her leadership and the foundation she has built. Angie brings a collaborative approach, a deep understanding of our organization and a proven ability to bring people together around opportunities to make a difference. I am confident she will continue to strengthen philanthropy across Carle Health and lead this work into its next chapter." Hatfield Marker brings more than 25 years of experience in strategy and leadership roles within healthcare philanthropy. At Carle Health, she has led campaign strategies, fundraising performance management efforts, pipeline development initiatives, cross-regional coordination projects - and helped secure over $8 million in philanthropic support during her tenure. "I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve Carle Health in this new role and humbled to build on the strong foundation Beth and our Center for Philanthropy team have created," Hatfield Marker said. "Philanthropy is rooted in relationships with our team members, volunteers, donors and community partners, and I'm excited to continue strengthening those relationships together." As part of her new responsibilities as Vice President, Hatfield Marker will lead philanthropic strategy throughout Carle Health by working with teams across regions alongside donors and communities to reinforce impact from patient care innovation through community programs and services designed both inside and outside hospital and clinic walls.
