Fast Company Awards recognize Stantec's ZenDen concept. Prototype multisensory experience earns finalist honors at annual Innovation by Design Awards 09/22/2026 PLANO, TX TSX,NYSE:STN Stantec, a global leader in experiential and interior design, has been named a finalist at the 2026 Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards for the development of the ZenDen immersive sensory installation. Consisting of three multisensory experiences contained within a modular pop-up space, the ZenDen was designed to explore how direct engagement with the senses can promote cognitive function, facilitate relaxation, and improve emotional and mental wellbeing. As a finalist in the Experimental Design category, the project was recognized as one of the top four submissions among all concepts, prototypes, and pioneering designs. Finalists are commended for demonstrating originality, beauty, sustainability, cultural significance, and measurable business impact. Sensory enabled architecture The ZenDen concept is the outcome of years of research and real-world experimentation by Stantec designers into the practice of sensory-enabled architecture (SEA). A research project led by Stantec and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro showed that environments that stimulate multiple senses more effectively enable users to self-regulate or take a mental health break. Additionally, participants in the studies stated that the ability to fine-tune conditions like lighting and sound to their own preferences contributed further to comfort and mental wellbeing. Stantec's research also studied the types of sensory stimuli that generate positive cognitive responses. Conditions such as increased relaxation, reduced stress, and improved focus were found to be strongly linked to the sensory experience of nature - the sounds of wind moving through trees, images of greenery and landscapes, and the smell of rain. Together, these findings prompted the team to focus more specifically on multisensory experiences designed to evoke a sensation of immersion in nature, as a way to calm the mind and enrich the senses. A modular proof of concept The ZenDen debuted at txEDCON 2024 in San Antonio, Texas, an annual conference for leaders in public education. Educational spaces emerged as an ideal setting to test the cognitive benefits of a nature-forward sensory experience, as students are expected to remain engaged and cognitively active for long periods of time and face growing emotional and mental health challenges. The prototype consisted of three distinct zones: * The Cavern: providing sensory deprivation with tall felt-clad walls, low lighting, and reclined seating * Creekside: offering sensory stimulation through adjustable light, sound, and scent elements as well as physical manipulatives * Meadow Walk: encouraging social engagement and spatial awareness The project also involved the fabrication of a custom audio-visual console designed to house the projection and sound equipment. Inspired by Cassette Futurism, a style that blends advanced technology with retro analog elements, the console offers a variety of tactile controls that enable participants to customize the lighting, sound, and projection conditions of their experience. Survey results from participants echoed the findings from the UNC study, that the opportunity to personalize the ambiance improves comfortability and relaxation, and was an important part of the installation's overall success. Wider applications Since txEDCON, the ZenDen has been deployed in a variety of conference and real-world education settings, where Stantec's team has gathered more data and feedback from users. Beyond educational settings, Stantec is actively developing iterations of the ZenDen. Healthcare facilities, offices, and high-stress environments like airports, stadiums, or convention centers could leverage different versions of the ZenDen concept to help reduce occupant anxiety, support wellbeing and productivity, and provide calming and restorative spaces. Stantec wins two awards at the 2026 Grands Prix du génie-conseil québécois. September 22, 2026 ArcelorMittal's wharves rehabilitation received the Visionary Award and Duravit's net-zero plant earned recognition in the Industrial category Two Stantec projects earned awards of distinction at the 2026 Grands Prix du génie-conseil québécois Gala, presented by the Association of Consulting Engineering Firms of Quebec (Association des firmes de génie-conseil du Québec). These prestigious honors recognize outstanding engineering achievements and celebrate excellence in project innovation, complexity, and sustainable development. The ArcelorMittal wharf rehabilitation project in Port-Cartier received the Visionary Award, the gala's highest distinction, recognizing one exceptional project among the finalists. As lead designer and engineer of record, Stantec worked closely with ArcelorMittal to rehabilitate a thousand metres of strategic marine wharves while maintaining port operations. By constructing a steel-concrete composite wall in front of the existing structures, without the need for full demolition, the team extended the wharves' service life by at least 50 years and reduced environmental impacts. ArcelorMittal's Port-Cartier facility is the largest private seaport in Canada. The Duravit net-zero factory in Matane was also recognized in the Industrial category. Stantec supported the leading global hygienic ceramics manufacturer in advancing a sector historically dependent on fossil fuels, specifically by integrating a 100-metre-long kiln powered entirely by hydroelectricity. A breakthrough project for Duravit in North America, the facility is expected to reduce approximately 10,500 tonnes of CO[2] equivalent emissions each year through electrification and local production.
Canada is planning to attract C$1 trillion in infrastructure and energy investment over five years, supported by tax breaks covering roughly two-thirds of capital expenditure and potential airport privatisations. Aecon Group, a C$3.2 billion construction and infrastructure developer, is positioned to benefit from this buildout. The company works on civil, transportation, utilities, industrial, and nuclear projects, generating approximately C$6 billion in revenue primarily from its Construction segment. It holds a record backlog driven by demand for energy transition and decarbonisation infrastructure, including grid-scale energy storage and nuclear refurbishment. Stantec appoints Kari Shively to lead North American Water business. September 18, 2026 * Kari Shively will lead Stantec's North American Water business from 1 October 2026. * Shively has more than 33 years of experience in the water sector. * She will oversee approximately 2,500 employees and a business with a net revenue target of C$970 million. * Stantec's Water practice covers water supply, treatment, wastewater, stormwater, flooding and resilience. * Jon Sylvie has separately been appointed to lead Stantec's North American Buildings business. Stantec has appointed Kari Shively to lead its North American Water business, with the appointment taking effect on 1 October 2026. Shively will oversee one of Stantec's largest practices, comprising approximately 2,500 employees working across water supply, treatment, wastewater, stormwater, flooding and resilience. Shively brings 33 years of water sector experience. Shively has more than 33 years of experience in the water sector and has held a range of leadership positions within Stantec. Her previous responsibilities have covered project management, business development, growth and operations, alongside the leadership of multidisciplinary teams delivering complex water infrastructure projects. As business unit leader for Water, Shively will direct a North American operation with a net revenue target of C$970 million. The practice provides planning, engineering, design and advisory services to utilities, communities and industrial organisations. "Water is at the heart of every community. The appointment comes as utilities and communities across North America face pressures associated with ageing infrastructure, population growth, climate change and changing requirements for water management. Stantec also appoints new Buildings leader. Stantec has also appointed Jon Sylvie to lead its North American Buildings business. The practice comprises more than 5,500 employees working across sectors including advanced manufacturing, airports, education, healthcare, industrial facilities and science and technology. Sylvie is a 21-year Army veteran with more than 14 years of experience in architecture and engineering practice. His previous experience includes business development, project delivery, client relationships and team development. Esh Group welcomes 16 new apprentices. North East construction firm Esh Group has welcomed 16 new apprentices across its business, including seven who have joined the growing Esh-Stantec team. The latest intake will gain practical experience alongside experienced colleagues while studying towards industry-recognised qualifications and developing skills for long-term careers in the sector. Seven of the apprentices have joined Esh-Stantec as it expands its workforce to support Northumbrian Water's AMP8 investment programme and the delivery of water and wastewater infrastructure projects across the region. Among them is Ona-Naura Lum, who has started a level four quantity surveying apprenticeship after previously completing a year-long placement within Esh Group's affordable housing division. Ona-Naura said: "My placement year gave me a real insight into the industry and confirmed this was the career path I wanted to pursue. "Everyone was incredibly supportive, and I knew Esh was somewhere I could build a strong foundation for my future career. "I'm looking forward to gaining more experience on site and developing my skills as part of the apprenticeship programme." David Pratt, divisional director at Esh-Stantec, added: "It's fantastic to welcome seven apprentices into Esh-Stantec as we continue to grow.
