Requirements
  • Completion of some high school coursework; alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Some related experience in processing or distribution of goods and knowledge of lifting guidelines.
  • Cash handling experience is required.
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures, including bank deposits and summary reports.
  • Experience working in a computerized environment.
  • Attention to detail, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Strong written and oral interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to successfully undergo applicable screening and background checks satisfactory to The Salvation Army, and provide an original copy of a background check screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding of and support for The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada as related to the position responsibilities.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods, with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching, and lift or move 30 pounds.
  • Ability to work a schedule that may vary from week to week and include weekdays and/or Saturdays.
  • Ability and willingness to wear gloves when working with unknown contents.
Responsibilities
  • Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales targets and provide efficient, courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
  • Know product pricing and featured sale products, and protect the integrity of donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Accurately complete customer transactions, including cash and debit sales, with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
  • Follow store policies regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
  • Process raw materials by loading and unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing donations.
  • Know stock well enough to respond to customer enquiries by phone or in person.
  • Monitor store activity and attend to store security.
  • Assist with store layout plans, including window and merchandise displays, and maintain the store's tidy appearance.
  • Help control inventory by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing items as directed; assist with donation turnover, replenish sales-floor inventory, and remove inventory from the sales floor as directed.
  • Handle merchandise safely and in an organized manner; assist with stock rotation, bag textiles for recycling, and place metal recycling in the appropriate location.
  • Assist donors with contributions, unload donations, and place stock in the appropriate location.
  • Maintain proper sorting and processing of goods and ensure compliance with quality standards and correct pricing under store policy.
  • Contribute to staff and customer safety by removing snow, keeping fire exits clear, cleaning spills, and ensuring there are no obstacles inside or outside the store.
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store; tidy and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as needed, and take turns cleaning the lunchroom, washroom, and other common areas.
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Perform responsibilities in keeping with The Salvation Army's mission, vision, values, and code of conduct.
