  • Expertise in a modality relevant to the core, such as fluorescence microscopy, live-cell imaging, flow cytometry, or computational analysis.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to document test results and quality control thoroughly, accurately, and legibly.
  • Ability to perform statistical analysis, prepare graphical displays, and perform calculations to support conclusions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and carry out instructions, and communicate questions to a supervisor as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and other departments, including explaining implications or applications of experiments.
  • Equivalent combinations of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Responsibilities
  • Perform rigorous, reproducible analysis of bulk and single-cell genomic datasets, translating biological questions into computational analyses and publication- and grant-ready results.
  • Manage daily core facility operations and consult with the Core Director and users about service delivery, technical capabilities, infrastructure needs, and utilization.
  • Manage multiple concurrent bioinformatics projects, prioritize analyses according to project timelines, communicate project status, and document completed analyses.
  • Design, support, and troubleshoot core computational and analytical workflows and methodologies; help users obtain high-quality data for publications and grant submissions; compile, analyze, and document core data, usage metrics, quality-control records, and performance indicators as appropriate.
  • Prepare or assist investigators with methods descriptions of core software, data platforms, computational analyses, or analytical workflows for manuscripts and grants.
  • Review software documentation, methods manuals, vendor documentation, and scientific literature to develop, optimize, and troubleshoot core technologies, workflows, analytical methods, and standard operating procedures.
  • Confer with the Core Director and users to review service needs, technical capabilities, and future directions; help design services and protocols and modify procedures to meet user and institutional needs.
  • Design and troubleshoot routine and complex technical workflows, analyses, software, and instrumentation-related issues for diverse research applications.
  • Maintain and advance technical expertise through hands-on experience, workshops, and specialized training relevant to bioinformatics, genomics, biostatistics, programming, data analysis, or the core modality.
  • Supervise core facility staff and trainees as applicable; participate in hiring, onboarding, and training; provide personnel and user performance input to the Core Director or departmental leadership.
  • Train, certify, and support investigators, staff, and trainees in safe and effective use of core instrumentation software, data platforms, and computational resources, and follow up with newly trained users.
  • Monitor shared software, data platforms, computing systems, and technical resources; assist users, enforce procedures, maintain work areas to institutional standards, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate technical support.
  • Schedule software maintenance, system updates, technical support, and service visits or consultations with vendors and information technology staff.
  • Coordinate shared software, data platforms, computing resources, and core services across departments and research groups.
  • Maintain online scheduling and project-management systems, track core services and computational resource use, and report operating-procedure violations to the Core Director or advisory committees as applicable.
  • Ensure availability of operational resources, including software licenses, data storage, computing capacity, secure data-transfer solutions, and other technical resources.
  • Understand applicable regulatory requirements and ensure users comply with them.
  • Oversee facility compliance with local, state, federal, and institutional requirements for data security, confidentiality, privacy, information technology, and appropriate research-data use and storage.
  • Coordinate with information services, information security, facilities, environmental health and safety, and other institutional departments to resolve core concerns or incidents and assist with setting up, relocating, expanding, or decommissioning core spaces and technology resources.
  • Liaise between purchasing and department administration to resolve procurement, service-contract, software-licensing, data-storage, computing-resource, and supply-chain issues affecting core operations.
  • Perform end-to-end bulk RNA sequencing analysis, including quality control, alignment or quantification, differential expression, pathway enrichment, visualization, and biological interpretation.
  • Analyze single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial datasets, including quality control, normalization, integration, dimensionality reduction, clustering, cell-type annotation, differential expression, compositional analysis, and pathway-level interpretation.
  • Analyze ATAC-seq, CUT&Tag, and CUT&RUN data, including peak calling, differential accessibility or binding, genomic annotation, motif analysis, and integration with transcriptional datasets.
  • Integrate datasets across experimental conditions, tissues, time points, species, and genomic modalities to identify biologically meaningful pathways, cell states, and regulatory mechanisms.
  • Generate publication-quality figures, including UMAPs, heatmaps, dot plots, volcano plots, enrichment plots, genome-track visualizations, and integrated multiomic figures.
  • Develop and maintain reproducible R, Python, and Linux analysis workflows and standardized core pipelines.
  • Meet with investigators to present results and explain computational findings to researchers with varied bioinformatics experience.
  • Contribute bioinformatics methods, figures, preliminary analyses, and technical language to manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and grant applications.
  • Evaluate and assist with implementing new computational methods and genomic technologies as the Bioinformatics Core expands.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, biostatistics, molecular biology, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • At least five years of increasingly responsible experience conducting laboratory research in a research laboratory or shared research core, including operational or technical leadership and managerial experience, is preferred.
  • Experience supporting shared instrumentation, multi-user environments, or core facility operations is preferred.
