Requirements
  • Less than high school education is required.
  • One year of maintenance and repair work experience, or equivalent education and experience, is required.
  • Two years of responsible building maintenance experience including preventive maintenance and repairs to buildings or facilities is listed as a qualification.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals is required.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and calculate rates, ratios, percentages, areas, circumferences, and volumes is required.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding and address problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations is required.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class C motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Knowledge of plumbing and electrical repair is required.
  • Ability to operate and maintain power and manual tools and equipment is required.
  • Ability to work under general supervision, read and write, lift heavy objects, and maintain effective working relationships is required.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in high or precarious places, outside weather conditions, wet or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme temperatures, vibration, and moderate to loud noise while using appropriate personal protective equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance routines on equipment.
  • Repair broken jail security doors.
  • Repair light fixtures and replace ballasts.
  • Clean and replace air-conditioner filters.
  • Repair heating and air-conditioning systems.
  • Repair kitchen appliances.
  • Make plumbing repairs, including shower buttons, flush valves, shower valves, leaky water faucets, and sprinkler systems.
  • Repair water or sewer lines as needed.
  • Clean wastewater lines and repair chilled-water pumps and valves.
  • Install conduit, electrical wiring, plugs, and light fixtures.
  • Perform welding as needed.
  • Remain on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies as directed by the supervisor.
Desired Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED certificate is preferred but not required.
