Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians with office procedures for biopsies, surgeries, and treatments for skin conditions.
  • Document and scribe office visits in the electronic medical record for clinicians.
  • Provide patient education and post-operative care instructions, and document patient understanding in the chart.
  • Provide direct and indirect care to an assigned group of patients in a dermatology healthcare setting under clinician supervision.
  • Collaborate with clinicians, ambulatory support staff, and other disciplines to deliver quality patient care.
  • Provide cross coverage when needed, including coverage for vacations, sick calls, and paid time off.
  • Assist clinical trainers with training new medical assistants and Gap Interns and retraining current staff.
  • Ensure necessary information, materials, equipment, and supplies are ready for clinician visits and procedures.
  • Receive and communicate information through computers, intranet, email, fax, and patient medical records while following HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, inventory, suture inventory, and expiration checks according to practice needs and cost-containment requirements.
  • Obtain and electronically record histories of present illness, problem lists, allergies, pharmacies, medications, and skin cancer history.
  • Assist with OSHA daily and monthly checks and maintain the OSHA log.
  • Escort patients, obtain and record histories and chief complaints, and prepare patients and procedure rooms according to diagnosis, procedure, and practice protocols.
  • Perform pre-visit procedures, including suture removal and dressing removal, under clinician direction.
  • Learn and perform ancillary services such as phototherapy, XTRAC, and photodynamic therapy as needed.
  • Assist clinicians in educating patients about biologic injection protocols.
  • Sterilize and package instruments and assist with cosmetic procedure preparation.
  • Observe and report abnormal symptoms or behavior to the appropriate clinician.
  • Organize and prioritize daily work so clinician schedules run smoothly and patient needs are met.
  • Apply laser safety protocols and standard precautions during room preparation and procedures.
  • Collect and label specimens, ensure specimens are placed in appropriate containers, and follow practice protocols.
  • Maintain pathology logbooks and document pathology reports.
  • Provide and review patient instructions for procedures and testing.
  • Maintain confidentiality and patient rights when interacting with patients, families, and healthcare workers.
  • Perform suture removals and other clinician-directed procedures.
  • Prepare and administer specified medication mixtures, including buffered lidocaine, Kenalog, sclerotherapy preparations, and cosmetic or hyperhidrosis Botox, as applicable.
  • Perform subcutaneous and intramuscular medication injections when competency is demonstrated and a supervisory agreement is in place.
  • Seek clinician advice for treatment adjustments or complications and use team leaders or managers as resources.
  • Lead clinical trials involving topical products and creams.
  • Explain study guidelines to patients and determine whether patients meet inclusion or exclusion criteria.
  • Provide study products and paperwork, follow up with patients, and record trial progress.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments and take before-and-after patient photographs.
  • Compile final clinical trial results in PowerPoint presentations and graphical representations.
  • Complete required training, including Code of Conduct, Privacy and Data Security, and OSHA training.
  • Follow applicable policies, procedures, industry standards, laws, regulations, privacy practices, and workplace safety requirements.
