Requirements
  • A four-year high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Professional work experience in landscaping, park maintenance, turf maintenance, or horticulture is required.
  • A valid driver's license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • For Groundskeeper II assignment, a satisfactory combination of education and experience equivalent to three years of increasing responsibility in landscape maintenance is required.
  • For Groundskeeper II assignment, proficient understanding and working knowledge of landscape maintenance, including mowing, string trimming, irrigation, weeding, and snow and ice mitigation, is required.
  • For Groundskeeper II assignment, the ability to maintain a landscape zone with significant independence through all seasons with limited supervision is required.
  • For Groundskeeper II assignment, the ability to identify ornamental and native plant material specific to the Northeast United States is required.
  • Internal candidates for Groundskeeper II must demonstrate full proficiency in essential job duties and have a satisfactory performance evaluation.
Responsibilities
  • Provide general landscape care and maintenance within an assigned section.
  • Care for and maintain plant beds, surrounding landscapes, hardscapes, playgrounds, and perimeters according to an established schedule and organizational standards.
  • Perform mowing, string trimming, irrigation, basic irrigation system maintenance, weeding, mulching, raking, sweeping, pruning, planting, and related landscape duties.
  • Open and clean playgrounds and turn on water features.
  • Install and repair fences as needed and directed.
  • Support waste management by collecting and properly disposing of trash in landscapes, paths, perimeters, and gardens; empty trash cans; and sweep around benches, stairs, and entryways.
  • Maintain athletic fields using appropriate lawn care procedures and groom infields, mounds, and other applicable areas.
  • Perform snow removal and ice mitigation on paths, entrances, playgrounds, perimeters, and other hard surfaces using machines and physical labor.
  • Maintain surface drainage by keeping catch basins free of debris during heavy rainstorms and removing remaining snow and ice during winter months.
  • Assist in preparing special events as needed.
  • Work with volunteers and seasonal interns.
  • Cooperate with department staff and personnel from other departments to complete assigned tasks.
  • Interact with park patrons and colleagues in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Operate utility vehicles, light or medium-weight trucks, and tractors.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report items requiring repair.
  • Participate in training sessions and seminars.
  • Submit daily reports of malfunctioning infrastructure, furnishings, safety hazards, and quality-of-life issues.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
