Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
  • Certification through an approved credentialing organization as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or equivalent is required.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • Graduation from an accredited Practical Nurse program is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I path.
  • An LPN license in South Carolina or a compact state is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse I path.
  • The employee must be able to perform the stated physical duties, including standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, reaching, repetitive motions, respirator qualification, and lifting or carrying objects weighing approximately 50 pounds unassisted.
  • The employee must maintain corrected 20/40 vision, work in a latex-safe indoor environment, and occasionally work in dusty or confined spaces.
Responsibilities
  • Calibrate, clean, and perform scheduled maintenance on clinical and laboratory equipment in accordance with OSHA, DHEC, and UMA requirements, and document the work.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information; document test and examination results.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and develop patient-education materials when necessary.
  • Maintain examination-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment.
  • Maintain timely patient flow and assist with appointment and referral scheduling based on urgency and availability.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide education related to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Observe, record, and report patients’ physical and psychosocial conditions and their reactions to medications and treatments to the physician.
  • Triage phone calls and call in orders as directed by the physician.
  • Instruct patients about treatment and medication as ordered by the physician.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in collecting samples and completing tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
  • Room patients, take vital signs and health histories, document information in an electronic medical record, give injections, and assist with minor procedures.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient-care experience is preferred for the Certified Medical Assistant I path.
