  • Strong programming ability (Python) and experience with common machine learning libraries.
  • Solid understanding of machine learning and computer vision fundamentals and of how to train and evaluate models.
  • Experience running experiments, tracking results, and performing basic troubleshooting and analysis.
  • Permanently authorized to work in the United States, must not require sponsorship of an employment visa at the time of application or in the future.
Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and evaluate scalable modular model architectures that allow specialization and efficient use of computation.
  • Develop and test methods that learn richer contextual and temporal representations by predicting or aligning different views, frames, or modalities.
  • Improve representation-learning pipelines by experimenting with data preparation strategies, augmentation approaches, training schedules, and hyperparameter settings to increase robustness across modalities.
  • Build reproducible training and evaluation workflows and run experiments at scale; maintain clear experiment logs and analyses.
  • Measure model effectiveness on clinically relevant downstream tasks (e.g., classification, detection, segmentation, retrieval, temporal reasoning) and produce comparison reports and ablation studies.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, clinicians, and researchers to curate and prepare datasets while following privacy and governance requirements.
  • Produce well-documented code, experiment artifacts, internal reports, and, where appropriate, contribute to technical write-ups or presentations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Prior research or project experience related to modular model design, predictive/alignment methods for representation learning, or representation learning using unlabeled data.
  • Experience working with medical imaging or multi-modal visual data (including video) and familiarity with common preprocessing challenges.
  • Experience with training models at scale and with experiment management practices.
  • Understanding of clinical evaluation metrics and concerns around generalization and robustness in medical imaging.
  • Publications, open-source contributions, or a portfolio demonstrating relevant work.

About the company

Johnson & Johnson develops prescription medicines and makes medical devices for hospitals, and unlike most big drugmakers, it runs both businesses under one roof. In 2015, its Darzalex became the first antibody drug approved for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. Its medicines treat cancer, immune diseases such as psoriasis, and mental illnesses such as depression, and patented drugs bring in most of its sales. Its MedTech unit makes heart pumps, catheters that treat irregular heartbeats, surgical sutures, and Acuvue contact lenses. It was founded in 1886 to make sterile surgical dressings, is based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and spun off its consumer brands, such as Tylenol and Band-Aid, as Kenvue in 2023.

What believers are saying

  • Cancer drugs drive growth: oncology sales rose 17% to $7.4 billion in the June 2026 quarter, 29% of the total.
  • Stock grants have gained value: J&J shares rose 58% in the year to September 2026, versus 23% for Pfizer.
  • Students have a way in: J&J listed 1,897 open jobs in October 2026, including 201 internships, co-ops and early-career roles.

What critics are saying

  • Its key immune drug trails: AbbVie's Skyrizi outsold Tremfya $5.5 billion to $2.0 billion in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Orthopedics is leaving J&J: in September 2026, it was negotiating a $20 billion sale to buyout firm Apollo.
  • Baby powder suits remain costly: in July 2026, J&J agreed to pay $5.5 billion to end about 76,000 cancer claims.

What makes Johnson & Johnson unique

  • Its debt is rated safer than America's: S&P's top AAA rating goes to only two US companies, J&J and Microsoft.
  • Employees rank above shareholders: J&J's 1943 Credo lists duties to patients, then staff and communities, with stockholders last.
  • Its psoriasis pill is a first: Icotyde, approved March 2026, blocks an immune signal rivals target only by injection.

Pomerantz investigates Johnson & Johnson after 5.73% share drop on talc charges and MedTech miss

Smith & Nephew's $22B talks to buy J&J's orthopaedics unit collapse over who would lead

Smith & Nephew's merger talks with Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over its orthopaedics unit collapsed over who would lead the combined company, the Financial Times reported. The sides had reportedly agreed on the main financial terms and the deal structure. J&J wanted Namal Nawana, who runs its orthopaedics unit and formerly led Smith & Nephew, to lead the business. Smith & Nephew wanted current chief executive officer Deepak Nath to stay. Smith & Nephew's offer valued J&J's hip and knee unit at up to $22 billion, almost double its own market value. J&J shareholders would have owned 50.1% of the combined company. J&J is leaning toward spinning off the unit as DePuy Synthes, targeting mid-2027. Reuters reported the unit sought around $20 billion and drew private equity interest. Both companies declined to comment.
