Requirements
  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Possess the current radiography license required by the state board where services will be provided: Maryland Radiographer License through the Maryland Board of Physicians; Ohio Radiographer License through the Ohio Department of Health; no state licensure required in Pennsylvania; or West Virginia Radiography License through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
  • Be nationally certified as required by the service location: Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists upon hire in Maryland, Ohio, or West Virginia, or within six months of graduation from the Medical Imaging Program in Pennsylvania.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete required state and, if applicable, federal criminal background checks.
  • Differentiate shades of gray and color as depicted on a monitor or photograph.
  • Stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds and carry items up to 20 pounds.
  • Interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  • Prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
  • Improvise altered positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use when routine positioning is compromised by a patient's condition, age, or ability.
Responsibilities
  • Perform imaging and therapeutic services and associated patient care to provide diagnostic information for subsequent patient treatment.
  • Rotate through all diagnostic areas, including fluoroscopy, mobile imaging, routine imaging, operating room, endoscopy, and orthopedics, to develop technical skills.
  • Perform image procedures based on patient assessment, service requests, and imaging protocols.
  • Produce optimal-quality images using imaging equipment and systems for image delivery and archiving.
  • Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and staff through shielding, collimation, the inverse square law, and minimizing repeat exposures.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient safety.
  • Assess patient needs and provide imaging-related comfort, hygiene, and range-of-motion support.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays for imaging procedures according to procedural guidelines and protocols.
  • Educate patients about radiographic procedures and answer their questions.
  • Interact with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff to provide Radiology services through a team approach.
  • Engage in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvement to support efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Apply imaging techniques and patient-care behaviors in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Code of Ethics, organizational and departmental policies, state and federal regulations, and Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Complete required in-services and competencies by their due dates and apply the knowledge gained.
  • Position patients accurately according to established protocols.
  • Participate in coordinating the daily workflow.
  • Provide limited clinical instruction and supervision to radiology students on patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use, in accordance with Radiology program policies and accrediting-body requirements.
  • Ensure all vital components of the imaging process are completed in their entirety.
  • Work with imaging equipment that has automated moving parts and in environments involving minimal occupational radiation, airborne particles, and bodily fluids.
