Requirements
  • An Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited Respiratory Care program is required.
  • Successful completion of the Therapist Multiple-Choice Examination within 90 days of graduation is required.
  • A Michigan state license is required; Graduate Respiratory Therapist status continues until the license is granted.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Satisfactory performance on the respiratory care medication competency test is required.
  • Completion of hospital, core, and department-specific orientation requirements is required.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from computer systems and equipment to determine an appropriate plan of action is required.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, accurately record activities and treatments, and communicate technical information and instructions to patients, families, and care-team members is required.
  • Ability to regularly lift bulky or moderately heavy weights up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks or equivalent pushing, pulling, or handling is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform routine respiratory care procedures according to established standards in general patient-care areas and, under therapist supervision, in adult, pediatric, and neonatal critical care units and the Emergency Department.
  • Direct and oversee assigned associates while they assist with advanced procedures such as mechanical ventilation.
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the population served when providing direct patient care.
  • Assess patients' respiratory status using basic assessment skills, including chart and monitor review and physical assessment.
  • Perform basic respiratory care procedures, including oxygen delivery and medication administration.
  • Assemble, check, and correct malfunctions associated with respiratory care equipment.
  • Under supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist, perform necessary measurements and calculations and assist in determining appropriate mechanical ventilation parameters.
  • Under supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist, perform emergency and acute respiratory care procedures.
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with other healthcare-team members regarding patient care.
  • Regularly communicate with the shift charge therapist about activity in the assigned area and availability to assist other areas.
  • Participate in department performance-improvement activities.
  • Assume responsibility for professional development.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in an acute-care setting is preferred.
