  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A Certified Nursing Assistant certificate from an accredited program is required.
  • A current, full, unrestricted CNA license in Alaska is required, or a current license in another state with an Alaska license obtained within six months.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within three months of hire and before clinical orientation is completed; it must then be renewed every two years.
  • Must pass courses required by the unit, such as a telemetry course with a score of at least 80% within three months and 80 hours of supervised registered-nurse clinical monitoring of telemetry, as well as point-of-care or waived testing as applicable.
  • Clinical competency is required within three months of hire and every three years thereafter.
  • Must maintain current certifications and licensure.
  • Must know the correct use of equipment and normal and abnormal patient findings as identified on the plan of care with a nurse's agreement.
  • Must accurately transcribe and retrieve telemetry and other nursing data; verbally communicate findings with the healthcare team; maintain safe patient and clean work environments using appropriate infection-control measures; and provide general nursing care with minimal direction under registered-nurse supervision.
  • Must establish and maintain cooperative interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and healthcare team members; maintain confidentiality of patient information; use patient-management techniques to defuse volatile situations; react calmly; make sound judgments within the scope of duties when caring for critically ill patients and during emergencies; demonstrate relevant scope of practice and infection control; follow instructions; and clean equipment.
  • For Critical Access Hospital assignments, must obtain 12-lead electrocardiograms; learn and perform inpatient telemetry monitoring; cross-train to additional hospital areas, including the Emergency Department, Labor and Delivery, and Surgical Department; cross-train to Senior Office Specialist/Ward Clerk duties; initiate and participate in a unit performance/process-improvement project; and serve as a preceptor for incoming CNA staff and students.
  • For Long-Term Care assignments, must meet the requirements to drive residents in the LTC van; perform daily restorative-aid activities under Therapies' guidance; participate in the LTC QAPI program, oversee at least one quality project in a 12-month period, and attend at least 80% of QAPI meetings; be able to perform LTC Informational Specialist duties when needed; and be able to obtain American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor certification and conduct required employee BLS skills evaluations.
Responsibilities
  • Obtain nursing data by interviewing and observing patients under a registered nurse's direction and review, and document observations under registered-nurse supervision.
  • Provide general nursing care to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, including hygiene and grooming, dressing, heat or cold appliances, pre-operative and post-operative care, and application of anti-embolism stockings or sequential compression devices.
  • Measure and record temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, and intake and output; collect and transport specimens; distinguish normal from abnormal findings and report and document them as appropriate; and report changes in patient condition or behavior and unusual incidents.
  • Perform unit-specific tasks and training, including electrocardiograms and telemetry monitoring in the unit or remotely, and provide telemetry reports to the registered nurse for review and signature.
  • Provide bedside care, including positioning, lifting, turning, toileting assistance, answering call lights, rounding, ambulating and transporting patients, assisting with or feeding meals, caring for patient belongings, changing linens, and keeping bedside areas orderly.
  • Assist the registered nurse in preparing patients for medivac transport, including making phone calls, copying papers and charts, and providing direct patient care; provide one-to-one sitting when indicated for patient safety.
  • Prepare nursing areas, patient rooms, and beds for admissions; return surgical patients, transfers, emergencies, and discharges; clean utility rooms and equipment and prepare items for disinfection or sterilization; report equipment problems to the nurse manager or charge nurse; and handle linens and supplies appropriately.
  • Distribute and order supplies to maintain adequate stock in assigned units; replenish patient-room and bathroom supplies; float to other hospital departments as needed; and dispose of solid and infectious waste according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participate in assigned in-service and educational programs, complete mandatory training and annual competency and evaluation materials, participate in applicable patient-care conferences with nurse agreement, and attend at least 50% of staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the nurse manager, charge nurse, or staff nurse in a responsible and respectful manner.

  • One year of prior experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant is preferred.
