About the company

Lunar Outpost designs robotic systems for space and Earth, focusing on lunar mobility and in-situ resource utilization, with the MAPP family of autonomous lunar rovers and the Lunar Terrain Vehicle, plus terrestrial sensors like Canary. MAPP rovers autonomously navigate the Moon, carrying science and commercial payloads, while the LTV is a human-rated rover that supports astronaut missions and deploys infrastructure. The company uses a mobility-as-a-service model and partners with NASA, GM, Goodyear, and Lockheed Martin to deliver payloads and enable lunar development. Its goal is to lower the cost of space exploration and help build a sustainable cislunar economy through reliable mobility, resource use, and communications-enabled systems.

What believers are saying

  • NASA awarded Lunar Outpost a $220 million Pegasus task order in May 2026.
  • NASA selected Starweave on July 29, 2026, expanding software revenue beyond rovers.
  • AEye, Nvidia, and John Shaw appointments strengthened Pegasus execution credibility in August-September 2026.

What critics are saying

  • Pegasus depends on NASA’s 2028 Artemis timeline and Blue Origin delivery services.
  • Lunar Voyage 1 never drove; lander attitude blocked rover deployment in 2025.
  • If Pegasus slips or fails, Lunar Outpost becomes a demo-shop, not a platform company.

What makes Lunar Outpost unique

  • Pegasus combines rover, autonomy, and mobility services under one NASA-backed platform.
  • Lunar Outpost flew Lunar Voyage 1 in 2025, proving lunar hardware heritage.
  • Starweave coordinates thousands of autonomous systems in GPS-denied space environments.

NASA inches closer to lunar base with advanced rover developments.

NASA inches closer to lunar base with advanced rover developments. October 20, 2026 18:53 NASA is making significant strides towards establishing its first lunar outpost, with key progress reported on a fleet of robotic and crewed rovers designed to explore, map, and support operations on the Moon. These advanced vehicles are crucial for everything from resource prospecting and scientific investigation to transporting astronauts and building infrastructure, paving the way for humanity's long-term presence beyond Earth. Robotic explorers paving the way. Leading the charge is NASA's VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover), slated for a 2027 mission to the Moon's South Pole. VIPER will delve into permanently shadowed craters, a prime location for searching for water ice and other vital resources that could sustain future lunar bases. The rover is designed to travel over 18 miles (30 kilometers), gathering critical data on the region's thermal conditions, lighting, and terrain. This information will not only help understand the origin and distribution of lunar water but also inform how these resources can be utilized for long-duration exploration. Currently undergoing final testing at NASA's Johnson Space Center, VIPER is set to be transported to Florida for its eventual launch. In parallel, NASA has awarded contracts to companies Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to develop the first phase of crewed lunar terrain vehicles (LTVs) through its Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative. These LTVs are anticipated to be delivered to the lunar South Pole by 2028, well ahead of crewed Artemis missions. Initially, these vehicles will be remotely operated from Earth, capable of traversing up to 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) daily. Their primary tasks will include mapping the lunar surface to create high-resolution maps and collecting data on operating in the Moon's extreme environment, including lighting, navigation, and energy management in frigid, shadowed regions. Crewed rovers ready for astronauts. The development of crewed LTVs marks a significant step towards enabling astronauts to live and work on the Moon. Companies like Astrolab and Lunar Outpost are progressing with their designs, which have undergone evaluation by NASA astronauts. Astrolab's Crewed Lunar Vehicle 1 (CLV-1), adapted from their FLEX architecture, recently had a mockup assessed by astronauts in Artemis lunar spacesuits. Before CLV-1's arrival, Astrolab plans to send a robotic precursor rover, FLIP, on a mission in late 2026, serving as a testbed for key components destined for CLV-1. Meanwhile, Lunar Outpost's Pegasus LTV, a lighter, mission-ready evolution of their Eagle rover, has also undergone crewed testing with astronauts in pressurized suits to evaluate its design and usability. These LTVs are being engineered with astronaut needs in mind. They will be capable of supporting up to three moonwalks per Artemis mission, carrying up to 176 pounds (80 kilograms) of lunar samples and tools, and traveling up to six miles (10 kilometers) on a single battery charge. The data gathered by these early robotic and crewed rovers will be instrumental in refining future mobility systems, hardware, and infrastructure essential for building and expanding humanity's first permanent lunar outpost.

Shares of AEye (LIDR) surged 38% on Tuesday, briefly surging past its 50-day moving average (50-DMA) for the first time in nearly three months, after the lidar company landed its first-ever space contract. LIDR shares also clocked their biggest single-day gain in more than five months. A multi-million dollar contract to use lidar on the Moon. AEye announced that Lunar Outpost, a private space firm, selected its Apollo long-range lidar for the Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle, which is being developed to transport astronauts across the Moon as part of NASA's Artemis program. Lunar Outpost plans to use Apollo for terrain perception, obstacle detection, and autonomous navigation. The deal marks a new commercial market for AEye, extending its technology beyond automotive and defense into the growing lunar infrastructure market. "This multi-million-dollar contract award is a testament to our technology and its ability to address this significant market opportunity," said Matt Fisch, AEye's Chairman and CEO. Why Lunar Outpost picked AEye's Apollo. Lunar Outpost is developing Pegasus to provide astronauts with transportation around the lunar South Pole. AEye said Apollo's solid-state design was a key factor in its selection for the project. The sensor is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, constant vibration, and the lunar vacuum. Its software-defined architecture also allows scanning patterns and performance to be adjusted for different missions without changing the hardware. AEye's defense business secures repeat orders. Earlier this month, AEye said Defense remains its most active vertical, with engagements doubling sequentially in the second quarter. AEye said its leading defense customer recently placed a third consecutive paid order and highlighted its growing repeat business, with Apollo being evaluated for drones, unmanned ground vehicles, and counter-drone applications. The company is also participating in several Level 3 and Level 4 automotive evaluations. Retail's take on LIDR.
