Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia, for the nurse practitioner pathway.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s degree as a Physician Assistant is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine is required, for the physician assistant pathway.
- Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Ability to perform heavy or hard work requiring strength and/or stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Ability to work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
- Strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, while considering comorbid conditions and overall disposition in collaboration with the clinical or faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with other clinical-team members, participate in directing care, and coordinate discharge planning or follow-up.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within scope of practice.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds and pre-treatment or pre-procedure evaluations in the infusion center, participate in ambulatory clinics, and participate in inpatient patient care.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations with hematology/oncology faculty collaboration or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient-evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge or follow-up by ordering and coordinating appropriate services and tests before discharge from the infusion center.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized plans of care for hematology/oncology patients, including acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
- Participate in physician rounds when applicable.
- Identify unstable or complex hematology/oncology patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the infusion center, clinic, or hospital setting.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate hematology/oncology patients and direct follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist in collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Maintain and update clinical knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for hematology/oncology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature when appropriate.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the patient medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in hematology/oncology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of delivering care to hematology/oncology patients and families in infusion-center, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports when appropriate.
- Participate in the University Health Associates Performance Improvement Plan and apply performance-improvement findings to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret hematology/oncology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Oversee and provide comprehensive and individualized care for patients being evaluated and managed in the infusion center within the scope of practice.
- Provide direct supervision of patients in the infusion center until the last patient receiving an infusion leaves the center.
Desired Qualifications
- Hematology/Oncology, acute care, or internal medicine experience is preferred.
- OCN or AOCN certification is preferred.
- Master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
