Requirements
  • At least 8 years of experience in creative leadership, with a heavy focus on earned media, public relations-led activations, or non-traditional advertising.
  • A portfolio demonstrating campaigns that achieved broad attention through public relations, social trends, or cultural moments.
  • Deep understanding of leveraging social, celebrity, and influencer ecosystems to drive brand discovery.
  • Experience translating marketing strategies, product roadmaps, and the news cycle into clear creative directives.
  • Experience serving diverse categories across the portfolio, from News to The Athletic, Games, and Cooking.
  • Ability to cultivate trusted relationships across the organization and navigate complex stakeholder dynamics.
  • Operational agility to navigate the time-sensitive requirements of earned media while maintaining high standards of craft.
  • Support for and understanding of the value of journalistic independence, with a strong commitment to the mission of seeking truth and helping people understand the world.
Responsibilities
  • Concept and lead the development of brand-building activations, partnerships, and communications content designed to generate earned media and social sharing.
  • Direct the day-to-day work of a Senior Designer, Earned by providing conceptual vision and guiding projects from strategy to launch.
  • Oversee the translation of earned media concepts into high-quality design solutions, including seeding kits and social assets, while maintaining brand standards.
  • Translate marketing strategies into clear, provocative creative directives for internal teams and external partners.
  • Develop creative ideas tailored to the audiences of News, The Athletic, Games, and Cooking, ensuring a cohesive visual and conceptual narrative.
  • Create work that integrates celebrities, influencers, and culturally noteworthy subscribers to amplify the mission authentically and newsworthily.
  • Guide the creation of social-first activations designed to thrive on digital platforms and spark community engagement without relying solely on paid media or editorially motivated social media handles.
  • Guide external agency relationships in partnership with creative strategy, earned production, and brand earned activations leaders, enforcing quality and brand/product standards.
  • Work with the Executive Director of Brand Activations and Talent to align earned ideas with broader business goals.
  • Act as an ambassador for earned thinking across the organization and engage stakeholders to build alignment.
  • Execute high-concept ideas while balancing quality with the demands of the news cycle.
