Lenovo acquires Phoenix Technologies, maker of iconic 1990s BIOS software

Lenovo has completed the acquisition of Phoenix Technologies' firmware business, bringing the iconic BIOS provider under Chinese ownership. The deal, finalised on 28 April 2026, includes Phoenix's intellectual property, engineering teams and chip manufacturer relationships, though the financial terms were not disclosed. Phoenix, founded in 1979, created the first commercially available IBM PC-compatible BIOS in 1984 and has supplied firmware for Lenovo's ThinkPad range for over 20 years. The acquisition gives Lenovo vertical control over the critical low-level software that initialises PC components before the operating system loads. Luca Rossi, president of Lenovo's Intelligent Devices Group, described the move as a "strategic turning point" that will deliver significant cost savings by eliminating licensing fees and enable firmware optimisation for future AI-powered PCs.

Lenovo partners with AIA New Zealand to enhance head office for hybrid work and sustainability.

Lenovo partners with AIA New Zealand to enhance head office for hybrid work and sustainability. April 15, 2026 AIA New Zealand Limited is reshaping the way its 700 employees work by transforming its North Auckland headquarters into a future-ready hybrid workspace. The country's largest life insurer, AIA NZ, aims to enhance employee wellbeing and meet its environmental goals through this ambitious project. The renovation underscores the growing trend among businesses to adapt their physical environments in ways that foster productivity and sustainability. The motivation behind AIA NZ's redesign hinges on the evolving dynamics of work, especially in response to the global shift towards a hybrid model. As Luke Longney, CTO of AIA NZ, articulated, "Our goal was to implement a technology solution that was both simple and modern." The upgraded office features cutting-edge technology designed for flexible work, aligning with AIA NZ's commitment to a modern corporate culture. To deliver on this vision, AIA NZ partnered with Lenovo, a global IT provider known for its innovation. The company equipped its headquarters with 600 Lenovo ThinkVision T34w-30 curved monitors and 700 ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 laptops, facilitating an effective hybrid work environment. Employees can seamlessly switch between home and the office - connecting their laptops to USB-C-enabled monitors at various desks, which can be easily booked via an app. Moreover, employee experience has significantly improved thanks to enhanced video conferencing capabilities. Longney noted, "We've seen a noticeable increase in video meetings, thanks to the improved camera and microphone performance." This flexibility allows employees to collaborate effectively, whether they are at home or on-site. However, the technology upgrade extends beyond just hardware. AIA NZ implemented Lenovo Premier Support, ensuring 24/7 access to IT experts and expedited onsite service. According to Longney, "The device refresh was essential to the overall project, and Lenovo made the process seamless. Everything was delivered on time, with no disruption." This proactive approach minimizes downtime and maximizes operational efficiency. Sustainability is another cornerstone of AIA NZ's strategy. The company took significant steps to responsibly manage its retired IT assets through Lenovo Asset Recovery Services (ARS). A structured process allows AIA NZ to securely wipe, refurbish, resell, or recycle aging devices. In total, the initiative effectively managed approximately 491 kilograms of retired equipment, equating to the weight of a concert-spec grand piano. Longney expressed his satisfaction with the sustainability aspects of the project, saying, "With Lenovo ARS, we have peace of mind that sensitive data is securely destroyed and that older devices are reused whenever possible." This not only supports AIA NZ's own environmental goals but also contributes to the broader circular economy, which is increasingly relevant for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprints. The transformation project has yielded tangible results, creating a more connected workforce and smoother operations at AIA NZ. Employee satisfaction has also seen a notable uptick, underscoring the success of the hybrid model. The upgraded office not only reflects a commitment to innovation and employee experience but also enhances AIA NZ's capability to provide exceptional service to its customers. As John Stamer, Vice President and General Manager of Global Product Services at Lenovo, stated, "Our work with AIA NZ shows how technology and sustainability go hand in hand. Lenovo Asset Recovery Services have helped AIA NZ transform responsible IT management into measurable business and environmental impact." This interplay between effective technology use and sustainability offers a roadmap for small businesses looking to modernize their operations while adhering to environmental standards. In summary, AIA NZ's transformation stands as a compelling case for small business owners considering similar upgrades. While equipping their offices with modern technology and sustainable practices may pose initial challenges, the resultant benefits - enhanced employee satisfaction, better collaboration, and a positive environmental impact - far outweigh the hardships. Lenovo launches early access for Qira: A new era in tech innovation.

Lenovo launches early access for Qira: A new era in tech innovation. April 14, 2026 Lenovo has recently announced the launch of its innovative personal assistant technology, Lenovo Qira, during CES 2026. This new offering is designed to embed Personal Ambient Intelligence directly into user systems, significantly enhancing the way individuals interact with their devices. At its core, Lenovo Qira operates on three interconnected principles: Perception, Actions, and Presence. This strategic framework allows it to understand the user's context deeply, anticipate needs, and initiate actions seamlessly across various apps and devices. For small business owners, this could translate into increased productivity and streamlined operations, enabling teams to focus more on core tasks rather than navigating a multitude of applications. Discover more Content Marketing Guide Business Start Checklist Digital marketing agencies Through its opt-in early access program, Lenovo is rolling out Qira on select compatible Lenovo PCs, catering to users eager to be pioneers in experiencing its capabilities. This phased approach not only ensures a high-quality user experience but also provides Lenovo with vital feedback to optimize the platform based on real-world usage. As Lenovo plans to expand Qira's functionality to other devices like Lenovo tablets and Motorola smartphones, businesses can look forward to a more integrated ecosystem that enhances both work efficiency and user satisfaction. A perfect illustration of Qira's utility can be seen in its ability to optimize daily tasks. Imagine a scenario in which meeting reminders are automatically adjusted based on your real-time workload or where relevant documents are pulled up on your screen when you enter a virtual meeting. Such capabilities can greatly reduce time spent on administrative tasks, allowing small businesses to redirect focus toward growth and innovation. However, while the potential benefits are considerable, small business owners should be mindful of possible challenges. For instance, transitioning to an AI-driven system may require thorough training for employees, as adapting to new technologies often involves a learning curve. Moreover, data privacy concerns may arise, given Qira's ability to collect contextual information to serve its functionalities. Small business owners must remain vigilant about compliance with data protection regulations to safeguard their clients' and employees' information. In terms of real-world implications, the introduction of Lenovo Qira signifies a shift towards a more responsive work environment. With businesses increasingly competing in a technology-driven landscape, equipping teams with smart tools like Qira can provide a significant edge. The emphasis on personal ambient intelligence could mean that responsiveness to customer needs will improve, leading to enhanced service delivery and ultimately greater customer satisfaction.
