Requirements
  • A City of Omaha journeyman license is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of basic carpentry, gas piping, electricity, and airflow is required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Working knowledge of local codes and general industry standards is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform all four stages of HVAC installation in new construction settings, including marking and measuring systems, installing piping and drain lines, preparing and installing ductwork, setting HVAC units, wiring, finishing, and startup.
  • Review blueprints and mark locations for HVAC systems, air returns, chimneys, and bath fans.
  • Interface with builders, contractors, homeowners, architects, building inspectors, and project managers to identify installation needs and receive job changes.
  • Measure and determine duct sizing for proper airflow, request required duct and fittings, and cut ductwork according to site requirements.
  • Install copper piping and drain lines below slab level when appropriate.
  • Install chimneys and roof flashing, ensuring the flashing is sealed against water leaks.
  • Cut holes with saws according to HVAC installation mark-outs.
  • Install bath exhausts, return air systems, hood vents, and zone damper systems.
  • Assemble and install HVAC units, condensers, air boxes, registers, thermostats, coils, air handlers, heat pumps, copper line sets, and risers.
  • Lay out ductwork before installation, modify existing space or build unit platforms to accommodate equipment, and ensure platforms support the required weight.
  • Read layout prints and install duct and flex systems and equipment according to job requirements; wrap and seal ductwork and secure installed duct.
  • Install refrigerant lines, fans, appliance vents, smoke detectors, humidifiers, and grilles; braze refrigerant lines, pressurize them with nitrogen, and evacuate refrigerant from units as required.
  • Test equipment by releasing the unit charge, starting the unit, and checking pressures with gauges.
  • Connect indoor and outdoor units using high-temperature soldering of copper tubing.
  • Install and test drain pans and drain lines to ensure proper flow and installation.
  • Wire the unit's main power line and secure high- and low-voltage connections.
  • Start up HVAC systems and verify operation through heating and cooling cycles; record model and serial numbers, heater and compressor amperage, and pressures.
  • Ensure HVAC installations, materials, and workmanship comply with technical and safety standards and regulatory codes; make modifications needed for proper installation and air balance.
  • Provide on-the-job training and support to assigned apprentice helpers.
