Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse program.
  • Hold active New York State Licensed Practical Nurse licensure.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support certification.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Have knowledge of electronic medical record systems and programs.
  • Have proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Responsibilities
  • Participate in applying the nursing process to an assigned group of patients under the direct supervision of a physician and/or Registered Nurse.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with patients, visitors, and employees while interacting professionally and appropriately.
  • Participate in the assigned department’s performance and quality improvement activities, including data collection, analysis, risk management, claims activities, Continuous Quality Improvement teams, and compliance with applicable policies.
  • Prepare patients for provider visits by verifying identification, conducting intake screening, completing pre-visit planning, reviewing medical records, and identifying missing laboratory or other testing documentation.
  • Manage clinic patient flow by monitoring provider progress and room availability, retrieving scheduled patients, and escorting them to intake or screening areas.
  • Prepare examination rooms and patients, complete intake documentation, set up suture-removal supplies when needed, and use two identifiers for patient identification.
  • Assist with patient examinations, including serving as a chaperone, assisting practitioners with procedures, and transferring patients on and off examination tables.
  • Perform or assist with suture removal, Steri-Strip application, minor dressing changes, cast removal, specimen preparation, cast-boot application, brace and support application, minor surgery procedures, post-procedure observation, and phlebotomy as authorized and trained.
  • Escort patients to and from rooms, radiology, and other departments or units according to follow-up needs.
  • Use hospital information-management programs and navigate the electronic medical record to print patient documents and education materials.
  • Administer and record medications, immunizations, and assigned treatments.
  • Handle dirty instruments properly for return to the Central Sterile department.
  • Guide and direct other Licensed Practical Nurses and medical assistants in rendering patient care.
  • Instruct patients on the collection and handling of laboratory specimens.
  • Perform delegated nursing activities related to patient care and nursing services.
  • Answer telephones in the clinical area using proper telephone etiquette.
  • Complete assigned training programs and remain current on departmental, hospital, Joint Commission, and Department of Health policies and procedures.
  • Maintain professional appearance and behavior in accordance with the health system’s dress code and professional standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competency consistent with the Licensed Practical Nurse role, standards of practice, licensure, care delivery, and patient management.
