About the job

Requirements
  • Experience building post-sale or after-market workflow systems such as warranty, repair, insurance, or returns platforms.
  • Strong integration engineering skills, including ownership of service-to-service contracts in a microservices environment and maintaining their stability across independent deployments.
  • Understanding of operational workflow design, including state machines, task queues, and human-in-the-loop steps.
  • Comfort working in a domain where business processes are still maturing and co-designing the aftersales operational model alongside engineering.
  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years as the de facto technical authority for a significant product area or team.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals in distributed systems, event-driven architecture, API design, database design, and testing strategy.
  • Ability to review and reason about code across the full stack of the domain and provide meaningful reviews on squad pull requests.
  • Experience in an Agile/Scrum or Kanban environment, driving sprint ceremonies, backlog refinement, and delivery alongside a Product Owner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and directly with engineers, Product, and the Head of Engineering.
  • Uphold engineering standards including GitHub-based code management, mandatory peer review, a unified branching strategy, and green continuous integration before merges.
  • Document APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger and significant decisions with Architecture Decision Records.
  • Keep secrets out of code, use AWS Secrets Manager or Vault, and maintain awareness of the OWASP Top 10.
  • Actively use AI/LLM tools in daily engineering workflows, including code generation, test writing, documentation, and debugging.
Responsibilities
  • Own the technical implementation of aftersales flows, including device swaps, repairs, insurance claims, returns, and end-of-loan processing.
  • Own the aftersales data layer that captures post-sale events, device state changes, and outcomes for reporting and operations.
  • Maintain the integration contract with Device Management Engineering for aftersales-triggered device lifecycle events.
  • Design configurable aftersales systems that accommodate market variations without requiring engineering changes for every variant.
  • Build dashboards and reporting to provide visibility into aftersales operations.
  • Own the squad’s technical architecture, including system design, API contracts, data models, integration patterns, and the Architecture Decision Records documenting decisions.
  • Enforce engineering standards within the squad, including GitHub use, mandatory pull request reviews, coverage gates, OpenAPI documentation, runbooks, and secrets management.
  • Represent the squad to the Platform General Architecture, escalate cross-squad concerns, contribute to shared standards, and align squad patterns with platform direction.
  • Review and approve squad pull requests and act as the quality gate for shipped work.
  • Define and maintain the squad’s Definition of Done and work with the embedded QA engineer to build quality into delivery.
  • Own the squad’s release process and sign off on releases, including partner work where applicable.
  • Drive sprint planning with the Product Owner, translate user stories into technical tasks, surface dependencies, and flag risks early.
  • Serve as the technical point of accountability for external partners when applicable, governing architecture decisions, code quality, and release timing.
  • Review partner code through pull request access before partner work enters production.
  • Manage and support direct reports’ day-to-day work, including unblocking engineers, pairing on difficult problems, and reviewing designs before implementation.
  • Give direct, timely feedback and take primary responsibility for the development of engineers in the squad.
  • Provide significant input into direct reports’ performance reviews and hiring decisions.
  • Model active use of AI/LLM tools in engineering work.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in fintech, payments, or digital financial services in Africa or Latin America.
  • Experience governing external engineering partners or SaaS vendor integrations.
  • Hands-on Java backend development experience.
  • Familiarity with event-driven architecture and Kafka or equivalent message brokers.

Kenya's Watu bags $7M in nondilutive debt to scale smartphone and vehicle financing

Kenya's Watu has secured a $7 million nondilutive debt facility from AHL Venture Partners to support its asset-financing operations across Africa and Latin America. The funding will strengthen working capital and expand the company's portfolio of motorcycles, three-wheelers, and smartphones in select African markets. Founded in 2015, Watu operates in 10 countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, and Mexico. The company reports originating over 7 million loans since inception, focusing on mobility and connectivity assets for underserved customers. The facility builds on a financing relationship dating back to 2022. It follows AHL's recent second close of its Africa Credit Fund I, which raised $45.5 million toward a $70 million target. The fund provides senior secured, mezzanine, and bridge loans ranging from $2 million to $10 million to profitable businesses across East, West, and Southern Africa.
